I just build a system, ASUS A7V266E with XP1800 boxed chip, stock fan and heatsink, used artic silver. My Asus software shows my cpu temp very stable about 57C, runs as high as 62C when running hard 3D games. Is this high? I know people with soyo boards reporting much cooler temps. What are the ranges for normal temp? Is artic silver Ok? Should I change anything, such as fan/heatsink? And finaly, If I dont plan to Overclock do I even need to care? Thanks for any info you can provide...

My MP1900+ CPUs were running in the high 50s to the low 60s until I got a bigger case and added more fans. I'm still in the high 50s after running for a few hours. As long as it can stay below 60 (where the alarms are set by default), and it doesn't get squirrely, I'm happy.
You are false data.

Alot of people fail to realize how hot things get inside their PCs. As Speed says, cooling that down can make a big difference.

One quick check you can do is pop open the case for a little while and see what the temp settles at. If there's a dramatic change, you can probably see a good part of that change just by adding a case fan. Pay attention to noise though, if you find fan noise uncomfortable. You can buy low-noise variants of pretty much every fan size.

AMD said something about the Athlon XP running between 0 and 95 degrees C. I'm running an XP1800 in an ANTEC case w/2fans and a Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu cooling fan. It stays at a fairly steady 47C not overclocked. The Arctic Silver is a good choice.

My stock AthlonXP 1700+ runs 39-40°C under full load with a case temp of 29°C.
It is cooled with a huge heatsink with a relatively quiet 80x80x25mm 2900rpm 37cfm fan. The online vendor from whom I ordered all of my other upgrade parts in November did not have a wide selection of 80mm fans. I am looking at this 80mm Papst fan for my next upgrade.

My overclocked (750 at 7x133=933MHz) and overvolted (1.82V) Duron runs 57-59°C under full load with a case temp of 29°C. I probably need to clean dust bunnies out of the fairly small heatsink with its relatively quiet 60x60x25mm 3800rpm 18.7cfm fan.

If the air blowing out of your power supply feels warm to the touch, then you probably need more case cooling. Add some large (80 or 92mm) low-speed quiet fans blowing in from the front of your case to improve this. It is easy to achieve case temperatures only 5°C higher than ambient with relatively quiet fans.

Someone pointed out in another post about temperature of XPs that the temperature we're talking about here (55 C for me) is the measurement from the diode on the motherboard and so it is just measuring the temperature of the air under the CPU. The core temperature could be much higher than this reading. Also apparently some motherboards are coming out with the ability to take readings off the CPUs diode. Would be interesting to see how much higher this is than the motherboard diode.

Does anyone have one of these mobos and could tell us?

How exactly can you read the temp? Reading it off the mobo sounds unreliable, and I havent noticed any lcd displays on mine (havent really looked tho - and its awful cramped). Sticking my hand over by the fans and the air is not that warm to the touch. However, im running a HP, and the only things Ive modified are the video card and RAM.
