Abit BD7 Raid and PC2700

Sat Apr 20, 2002 4:11 pm

Hello all,

what happens when I insert a Samsung DDR PC-333 (PC2700) in an ABit BD7 Raid mainboard ??.

Thanks in advance

Nothing spectacular really. :-)

But after you turn the power on, you would probably see a nice little boot screen. And perhaps even a Windows logo? :D

Hello to Sweden,

nothing happens, it goes through the boot sequence,, then an error E1 and / or E2 is displayed on the onboard LED.

I suspect that my Samsung 512MB DDR333 PC2700 is not welcome on this mainboard.

Poka

John

Johnnie, what kind of answer did you suspect? From your original question we could have no real idea what you wanted to know.

I assume you've tried reaseating the memory several times, and moved it around a bit. Also, what is this error "E1 or E2" - is it a memory error or what? Have you tried other RAM in this board, or your RAM in another board? I wish I knew your BIOS error codes to help, but I don't. One more thing - what happens if you try to boot with RAM slots empty?

Thanks for the prompt reply,

I have tried the (DDR333) memorey in two mainboards.. (ASUS P4B266 SE and ABIT BD7 Raid). These are DDR only mainboards, placing the memory in different slots, or NO memory, always produces the same results. I would thinh that E1 / E2 means Error 1 Error 2 etc., as usual, it is not described in the manual. I have heard from other sources that the above mentioned boards will NOT accept PC2700 memory chips...

John

PS Long live the mainframe

I would say the problem is with your mobo, if you have booted up without any memory installed, and still get the same error(?) display, then I would think there is a problem with your mobo. Have you tried to get a hold of ABit? Maybe they have a tech support database that would help.

Thank you for the reply,

unfortunately (or, as usual), the ABIT website offers nothing. The hand book says "PC1600 and PC2100" supported. As I have a PC2700, things do not look good.

Regards,

John

Hi,

Well, I'm using an Abit BD7 with two sticks of Samsung PC2700 512MB, and it seems to be working fairly well (there are known "Cold boot" issues with the BD7, but the latest beta bios fixes most of those). I would guess the RAM is bad, if you tried it in both boards and neither worked.

As for PC1600/PC2100/PC2700, at default speeds for a P4, *any* of the three types should work. However, PC2700 should work at at least up to 166MHz bus, if I remember correctly.

(these are from memory, so they may be wrong:)
PC1600 = 100MHz FSB (200MHz DDR)
PC2100 = 133MHz FSB (266MHz DDR)
PC2400 = 150MHz FSB (300MHz DDR)
PC2700 = 166MHz FSB (333MHz DDR)
PC3000 = 185MHz FSB (366MHz DDR)
PC3200 = 200MHz FSB (400MHz DDR)

So, the PC2700 should definitely work with the default settings on a BD7-RAID, which are either 100MHz or 133MHz (depending on DIP Switch #1 and #2).

One thing to try: when you insert the memory, push on the back of the motherboard so that you're sure the memory gets fully inserted. I've seen personal cases where the board bends a little in the middle of the DIMM slot, and the middle pins don't get fully connected.

Good luck,
