i7 2600K arrived...

Thu Oct 20, 2011 11:34 am

And wow, what a difference in performance!! Moving up from a Phenom II 940 @ 3.8Ghz there is a huge leap forward, even in most games I play. Specifically DoW2 went from ~49FPS to ~110FPS. Major difference in the quality! Many other things happen a lot snappier too. I am very happy, and if anyone is on a Phenom II and thinking about the new Sandy Bridge, you will not be disappointed.

Yeah the sandy bridge is a beast compared to what AMD has to offer. The Ivy Bridge coming next year is going to be even a bigger beast. One thing I'm really surprised is how cool it runs most games and apps with the stock low-profile cooler.

Congrats on the new cpu ! I'm considering building a box around the 2600k myself. My last dekstop being an E8500@4Ghz - i should be pleased :)

Want to make that shiny new 2600K sweat a little? You can help make Frankie scary for at least this month. ;)

Can you fold on a 5870? I will do it if one of you assist me in setting it up to fold for TR. Heck, I work with farmpuma's son...might as well get into it. :P

You sure can. You'd get a lot more points on the i7 though. OC that thing to 4.0 and throw bigadv on there!

You'll want the Windows V6.34 SMP

How does the GTX 580 stack up to the i7 in folding? The last time I folded I think the early Fermi cards were murdering my Core 2... any work unit is better than no work unit tho. :)

I think a 580 is around 17-20K depending on clockspeeds.

You shouldn't get anything less than 20K on an i7-2600K though. Really depends on clockspeeds and projects.

edit: I should add, I have seen some 2600K's get upwards of 50K ppd.

Glad to see this thread. After a major disappointment with mediocrity of Bulldozer I'm pondering going Intel after 9 years of AMD which started back in 2002 with Athlon 2100+ Palomino. I'll might be jumping from Ph II 945 (95W) to i5 2500K so my gain would be slightly less massive than yours but I reckon it will still be worth it. Current Ph II was barely enough to game at 2560x1600 at decent settings. Hopefully 2500K will be more up to the task.

I was in the same boat as you. AMD for many years now, and this is my first Intel build for myself. Honestly I was happy that I made the switch. The quality of the motherboard really blew me away. Its a bit more expensive but god, you miss out on so many nice features if you go AMD. :/ I really wanted to keep with them but I just can't support a company that sees progress as moving backwards.

Both boards are made by Asus. Aside from the fact that AMD board was mATX and hence had less slots than Intel-based Asus mobo I don't see any significant killer features aside from easier overclocking. Am I missing something?

Whoa, what? When did CPUs start having a chance against GPUs again?

I was going to join Franky this month but the BSOD issue with my Vertex3 killed it - I'll be updating the firmware this weekend though so hopefully I can try... I have a 2600k @ 4.2 and dual 2GB 5870s...

Any indicator lights are not present on AMD boards. Very few MemOK! options or any easy overclock options available. You will typically find that the boards for AMD are not thought out as well, and GPU placement will hinder the ability to plug things into the board, thus making it so you have to remove the GPU every-time. Few AMD boards come with the front-panel extender as well. Basically, boards for AMD need to be cheaper so all the extra nice features are left off. I also found the Thermal Armor to be a joy to work with, though I know it could hinder my temps rather than help them. Installation was much easier with it on, and dropping screws/etc was not an issue. Similarly, no thermal armor on AMD boards.

Ill echo DrFish. Didnt realize cpu's had caught back up to GPU's A couple of years ago everyone was going for the 460 cards for folding. It will probably be December before I build but I'll fold some for Frank when / if I do. Thanks DancinJack

I got it up and running, only the CPU one. I feel like I might have set it up wrong. I have it set to take up 100% CPU since I"m not on it right now, but its only utilizing 12% of the processing power. Any ideas?

Did you make sure and set the -smp 8 - bigadv flags?

The v7 client is much easier to use if you haven't folded before. It does still have some bugs, but I haven't had any issues running it since the beginning of the month.

I assume you are using the "console" version? Then do a "fah6.exe -configonly" in the Command Prompt and answer the questions (answer "yes" for the "do you want to configure advanced options" question).

OK, here's a session for you:
C:\Folding@Home>fah6 -configonly

Note: Please read the license agreement (fah6 -license). Further
use of this software requires that you have read and accepted this agreement.

Since the arrival of the -bigadv WUs (only 7 threads or more apply) and the early return bonus. They have reduced the bonus a bit so the top GPUs still beat out the bigadv WUs, but they at least can put up a fight. The WinSMP client also has improved in stability and can now be run as a Windows service, with no more mpiexec/deino madness (now running in threads not spawned processes). I have moved my headless server and my brother's box to WinSMP running as a service since like 6 months ago. No trouble so far with the only thing I needed was to shutdown the service on my server to change username to Frankie. For not running as a service, the v7 GUI client promises to be easier to use as well. I would say it's time to give SMP clients another chance and come back to the Fold. ;)

Actually, Ivy's only supposed to be about 10% faster, give or take a little. The beast part is how amazing the drop in power is supposed to be (possibly 40-50% for the CPU), and a greatly improved graphics core for those using Intel HD.

SB is quite a leap over anything previous though, even including Nehalem-based stuff. I have a Core i7-860 at work, which runs great under all sorts of loads. I can't really say I felt a difference between it and my overclocked Q9650 from home (at the time I had it) though, with the one exception of video transcoding, where it shined.

My Sandy Bridge processors have noticeable performance gains over both. If you use Bitlocker or TrueCrypt, there's no comparison, SB kills anything previously.
