Need advice on selecting one of following 2 systems

Postposted on Fri Dec 09, 2011 9:46 pm

How do following 2 systems compare when it comes to computing power ?

I will be connecting 12 Monitors ( Dell 24 inch 1920x1200 ) to each system by installing 3 ATI FirePro 2460 Cards each supporting 4 monitors.

This rig would be used only for 2D Financial graphics & not for any kind of Gaming at all.

Which one of following two would you choose & why ?

(1) I-7 Desktop :

Intel i-7-2600K 3.4 GHz Processor

Asus WS Revolution motherboard with 4 PCIe x16 slots

16 GB G Skill Ripjaws OR Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 RAM

760 Watt Seasonic Gold Modular power supply

Corsair Obsidian Series 650D (CC650DW-1) case

500GB SATA (7200 RPM ) HDD

Windows-7 64 bit ( Ultimate )

OR

(2) Dell Precision T5500 System :

Single Intel Xeon E5645 2.4 GHz LGA 1366 Processor

Intel 5520 Chipset & Dell MOBO with 4 PCIe x16 slots

Integrated Broadcom 5761 Gigabit Ethernet Controller

12 GB (6x2 GB) DDR3 RDIMM Memory, 1333MHz, ECC

500 GB SATA (7200RPM) Hard Disk Drive

875 Watts PSU

Windows-7 64 bit ( Ultimate )

Thank You.

Have you looked into the I7-3820? Memory performance may help you in this type of layout.

I thought you just built that i7 system for the exact purpose of a 12 monitor setup?

I don't see anything about the Dell that would insprire me to pay more than double what you could build that Sandy Bridge system for. If you really wanted to upgrade while spending as much as that Dell, I would look into building an SB E system like the Double-stuff workstation found here; http://techreport.com/articles.x/22513/8

Considering you wouldn't need the graphics and probably not all the storage, you're looking around $2k for a system that would beat the dell and the other SB system in a few areas.
Keep your stated config but swap in an X79 mobo:

i7-3930k processor:

and I think you would be well served by getting an SSD in there to nicely balance things out. Probably don't need the 256GB from the system guide, so I would recommend the 128gb version here:

My newegg cart is showing around $1,8500 for everything, more than a grand less than the Dell and that includes a faster/better processor, more/faster RAM, and an SSD.

Seeing as how that was posted back in December, I wonder what he ended up getting?

Oh man - I didn't even notice this was a necro... Sounds like he might have already gotten the SB system. Or maybe the dell...

God I didn't realize it was that old when I posted. It popped up in unanswered posts on the top of the list. Sorry for bringing it back.

I figured some spambot posted in it and then that post got deleted but the thread popped to the top of the "recent activity" list which then faked you out. I've seen it happen before in other forms.
