Re: FX-6100 / FX-6200 vs. Core i5-2500K

Wed Feb 29, 2012 10:08 am

Well I just got my 2500k and while I haven't even started using the system that I put together, I don't plan to OC it for probably over a good year... Why you ask?

Why I ask!!! The 2500k is going to act like a raped ape in most any program that most people will throw at it (not originally intended as a Big Blue Gorilla joke, but now is :)).

Now when newer programs/games come out that start to tax it and the GPU is no longer the limiter in the games, then I'll start a good OC. At first I may just see how far I can push the 2500k so that in the future I know what to expect. Even if I do OC now, its not going to be eye bleeding, I value the life of the hardware more than I do 1 more FPS in a CPU intensive game at this juncture.

Don't be a turkey. Put the multi to 40 - not voltage tweak needed - and at least let it run that way until you eventually want to bump it some more. There's no excuse for running an unlocked CPU at stock speed - "not needed" isn't acceptable. :D

Agreed. No point buying a 'K' when you aren't even going to use it for a while. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead !!

I'm against letting any Windows utility do my OC for me, but I wanted to try out the Gigabyte utility for my 2500, and it will scale the CPU up to 4.4. I left it at 4.1 for now, as I am still dealing with weird fan issues on the H80.

Yeah, I got 41 on my 2600K without trying. I really should bump it one more to 42, it's been running stable since I got it for $269 at the NCIX-US grand opening.

That's probably the biggest downside of the FX series outside of its performance in general is it soaks up voltage to overclock well - that said, it DOES overclock well and performance scales spectacularly with clockspeed, but im at 1.425v to get to 4.2ghz
Hey girl you want a bad boy? I overclock my backup servers.

Hmm... I don't see anything spectacular about it. Performance scaling of Sandy Bridge is easily just as good. I'd have to pull out a calculator to really be sure, but I don't think a 10% overclock gets you anything more than 10% performance increase and that's best case.

I don't believe anyone is claiming FX is a better CPU than Sandy Bridge, only that FX overclocks well.... which is ok to say because it does.

Oh, now I understand. For a moment there, I thought when he said "performance scales spectacularly with clockspeed," he meant that performance scales spectacularly with clockspeed.

It might overclock well, but I still don't think it's going to touch Sandy's overclocking potential. If you buy the fastest Sandy Bridge i5 you're generally (not always, but pretty often) looking at a 30-35% overclock without even trying. If you buy the fastest FX with any number of cores, you're looking at like half that percentage. I may be wrong but it seems like the argument is that the FX has better OC potential but I'm not seeing it. That is, unless you buy a lower-end part of the same stepping, and in that case the FX is as much as winner as the Thoroughbred B 1700+ or the Celeron 300A - artificially binned at a lower price/performance where it will actually sell, only to be busted wide open by overclockers. You don't get that with lower i5 parts because they're partially locked. The very best you can do is match a higher model number's un-OC'd numbers.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

I have to agree. Buldozer, from what I've seen in the first wave of reviews, tops out at 4.6 GHz or maybe a little more if you're lucky. Sandy will do that on air with ease, and give higher performance and lower power consumption. Sandy frickin rocks.
