Sun Apr 07, 2013 4:51 pm

will an AMd FX-6300 be good enough for mainly gaming...and also will it bottleneck a sapphire 7870 XT?!

Intel CPUs are generally better at gaming. I would recommend an Intel i5 (as in your previous thread)
Main: i5-3570K, ASRock Z77 Pro4-M, MSI RX480 8G, 500GB Crucial BX100, 2 TB Samsung EcoGreen F4, 16GB 1600MHz G.Skill @1.25V, EVGA 550-G2, Silverstone PS07B
HTPC: A8-5600K, MSI FM2-A75IA-E53, 4TB Seagate SSHD, 8GB 1866MHz G.Skill, Crosley D-25 Case Mod

But that thread does not answer the question he asked in this thread

Again, you're not answering what he asked.

As for my opinion, yes, the FX-6300 is fine for gaming, sure the intel chips will get you more a couple fps on some games, and perhaps some slightly smoother frames as well, but the difference is so small that you probably wouldn't be able to notice.

Will a 7870 bottleneck this chip? This kind of bottlenecking is very dependent on the specific game you are looking at, but I found this:
http://technewspedia.com/curious-review ... duo-e8400/
Where the 7970 was tested on a few different CPUs modern intel and AMD ones as well as an old Core2Duo. The difference between the i7-3770 and the AMD FX-4170 and FX-8150 is only in the order of about 5%, but the difference between all of the modern chips and the 5 year old Core2Duo is quite big. So, no, I think the GPU will be be the bottleneck, not the CPU.

This question is best asked and answered in the context of the complete system build. It is best practice not to start a thread for individual components of the same build. And it's not just best practice, but it is a practice that is actively encouraged by the forum moderators. I'm using an FX-8350, which I think is not much faster than the FX-6300, and, paired with an HD7770 I would say it delivers acceptable gaming performance in newer titles. Then again, I don't have a Core i5 to compare it to so saying that games run smoothly or choppily wouldn't be informative enough as to whether you should get an FX-6300 or something from Intel.
