In a couple months I'm going to upgrade and I was wondering if any CPU was annouced that might be very good, depending on my budget I might get a 3930k because I'm not only a hardcore gaming enthusiast but also I'm gonna do encoding, and probably 3d designing also.

So I'm not sure if I should get a 3930k or just wait more to see if there will be a new extreme series CPU similar to this one (but that beats it of course).

Of course I might have a more restricted budget..then I will simply go for a 3770k !(that seems to be the best price per performance at the moment)

I have googled and have'nt found much info but I know some of you are better informed so I thought I would ask

Ivy Bridge-E is supposed to be released by the end of September.

No word on pricing, but I think I read somewhere that the 49xx series is supposed to support a part of Intel's virtualization technology (VT-d). Currently only Xeons support it (again, if I recall correctly).

Cool thanks I'll check it out, yea that 1 might be arround the 1k price tag though so maybe if I win lottery (we never know lol)

But also the gain of performance seems pretty irrelevant compared to the 3930k we'll see the price tag..

If you're on a budget, an i7 3820 might be a good entry point into the HEDT platform and keep the door open to future upgrades on socket 2011.

I got a 3820 for $279.99 and ASRock x79 Extreme4 for $209, from newegg.ca a few months back. SB-E CPU and Motherboard for $490 shipped was a sweet deal!

If you can score a similar deal, you'll still be in 3770k/4770k performance area, and still be on socket 2011 and have the option to upgrade to Ivy-E if you suddenly have the extra cash for a 6 core chip.

I think that the 3820 suggestion is really bad advice.

The 1550 platform (Haswell) is likely to work fine with the next series chip (Broadwell)

For about the same price as the 3820 in the USA, you're able to pick up a 4770k which will be significantly faster.

Your motherboard will cost less also.

Clock for clock, Haswell is 26% faster than sandy bridge which you would be buying if you went with the 3820.


2011 is only worthwhile if:
1. You need 6 cores
2. You need more than 32 GB ram
3. You need lots of pci-e lanes

Pretty sure I've seen articles about Broadwell not coming to desktop.. this suggestion gives him a good rig at a reasonable price point and the option to go 6-core down when some extra cash frees up if his budget is restricted right now. OP did mention considering 6 core so this still gives him the option. Hardly what I would call "really bad advice" as it actually offers space for future upgrades whereas 1150 (1550?) is already dead.

Yes, an x79 motherboard will likely be more expensive, but some of the difference in price of a good z87 and an x79 motherboard can be offset by the extra 40-60 bucks he would pay for a 4770k.

How about the new Core i7-3910K is based on the same Sandy Bridge-E C2-stepping silicon as the i7-3970X, and is said to feature 3.00 GHz clock speed. There's no clarity on exactly how many cores it features, but given that it's named in the i7-3900 series, and not the i7-3800 series, we're leaning toward it being a six-core part. A bid by Intel to clear out "imperfect" Sandy Bridge-E silicon by giving it a relatively low clock speed? We doubt that, it features the "K" brand extension, which denotes unlocked base-clock multiplier. Intel's cheapest LGA2011 six-core part is the i7-3930K, which goes for roughly US $550. If Intel prices this chip just right, by that we mean $400-ish, it could be a tease for all those shelling out $350 for a Core i7-4770K. Low clock speed, but unlocked. Two extra cores, quad-channel memory.

At around $400 only around $50 more then a 4770k, it looks like a great way to get on the socket 2011 X79 6 core overclocking bandwagon. If that CPU was around when I built my 2600k setup I would have been all over that CPU like a fiend. Also you could upgrade to a 6 or 8 core Ivy Bridge E CPU down the road and sell the 3910k to someone sporting a 4 core 3800 series CPU.
