upgrade from phenom 2 x4 955 to i7-2600

Postposted on Wed Sep 18, 2013 12:48 pm

would an upgrade from the 955 be to an i7-2600 be that big of a difference? i bought the i7 system pretty cheap, so im stuck with a dell board for now. just wondering if i should sell the i7 or keep it and sell the 955

Yes, it is a very big upgrade. Have a look here:

http://techreport.com/review/24879/inte ... eviewed/14

and consider that you x4 955 is slower than the x4 980. The i7 2600 k on those charts is run at stock speed, so is the same as your i7 2600.

"would an upgrade from the 955 be to an i7-2600 be that big of a difference"

Yes if you use the chip to it's potential.

If you don't and you expect the "big difference" to be in terms of boot speed, load times etc. than an SSD would have been a more practical upgrade.

Either way, you should have enough CPU power now for the next 5 years.

He already has the system, now he's wondering if he should sell the i7 2600 system or sell the x4 955 system. I say sell the x4 955 system and put that money towards an SSD, which, you're right, is an entirely good thing to spend money on.

yeah, i already have it, and am currently using it. i picked up the board and 2600 for 150 bucks. so if i can sell my phenom and board with aio water cooler for close to that i will be happy. one strange thing is i seem to get lower framerates in tomb raider with the 2600. running a 4870x2, 8 gigs ram, windows 7 64 bit

You've got me confused. You say you're coming from an x4 955, yet your sig presents an i5 750. Are you using the same video card in both machines? I see a GeForce in your sig. Anyway, the video card could be the bottleneck. A 4870 X2 is at best (when crossfire works at its best, otherwise, not nearly...) equivalent to a 5870 which is just barely equivalent to a 7850.

The i7 2600 is unambiguously and without exception significantly faster than an x4 955. If you're not seeing that result (and, from personal experience, the result can be plainly observed in some applications) then there is something wrong with the system - drivers, BIOS, RAM.... something.

flip mode, sorry for the confusion, sig hasnt been updated in a while. i had the i5 with those cards, then upgraded to 2 5830s, but since sold that system. i found a phenom 955 be with half its pins bent. I took an hour and straightened them, and have been using it ever since. I know a guy who runs a computer repair and sales shop, so i get lots of stuff for next to nothing, or nothing at all, and if i can fix it i keep it. I actually have a 6850 at home that i cant get to post, so im not sure what the issue is or how to go about testing it. But anyway, i have the i7 now, and was just curious as to real world performance differences. i found the i5 chugged along quite slowly at times, and really liked the phenom, but i know the i7 should be quite a big upgrade.

OK. And what about the video card - are you using the same video card in both systems when comparing the 2700 to the 955?

yes, exact same parts, except the 2600 and p8h61-m board.

OK. I don't know anything about core parking that axeman mentioned, but that seems like the next thing to check into.

I went from a Phenom II X4 945 to an i7-2600K.

DO IT! IT IS A MASSIVE PERFORMANCE INCREASE

I run an Asus P8Z77-V Pro with 16GB DDR3 2133 and a measly GTX 760(that surprisingly gets the job done well).

OMG it is a huge upgrade.....If it is a 2600k then the hyper 212 should cool it just fine. You wont be able to overclock it on a h61 board so if you do find out it is a K chip I highly rec you get a p67, z68 or z77 motherboard

now maybe its coincidence, but i disabled core parking, and changed nothing else, and my framerate just about doubled in tomb raider

It doesn't sound like coincidence. Try enabling core parking again, run a framerate test, then disable again and run another framerate test. If framerates go up and down with care parking then you have a true correlation.

i just tried playing crysis 2, and everything is set to extreme at 1080p and it plays great, im surprised in the change from just the processor. had to dial it down to 720 to be playable before

Yeah. It's a rewarding feeling when you first experience a boost like that. I remember when I upgraded from an X2 3600 that I ran at 3.1 ghz to an x4 955 which, as you should know, runs at 3.2 ghz stock. The performance increase in games - even though the clocks were nearly the same - was spectacular and I remember being quite satisfied. Crysis went from unplayable to fluid and enjoyable. That was without changing the video card (HD 4850 at that time) - just swapped in a new mobo and CPU - didn't even reinstall the operating system (Vista at that time) or anything.

I guess that core parking stuff is a serious thing. I'm going to have to read up on that.
