CPU temperatures readings

Thu Nov 20, 2014 10:10 am

Hi,

I was worried when I saw at the BIOS screen that my CPU temperature was between 80 and 90º Celsius.

Then I downloaded a program called "CoreTemp" and it says that CPU temps are between 40~60 Celsius.

Why there is such a discrepancy? Should I be worried or do something?

o/

EDIT> Under load it got quite hot:
Is this CPU designed to run at 98ºC and then lower its clock to fit the thermal envelope? (i5 2500)

There is no need to worry CPU trends to heat up a lot and there is critical cut off temperature for each CPU so when that temperature reaches automatically your CPU will turn off your system.

If your running your computer continuously it is recommended to have a air conditioner to keep the temperature down also keep the CPU fan and the heat sink clean from dust for efficient cooling

Your CPU should not be running that hot.

Make sure the heatsink is clean and the fan is running. If it is a recent build was thermal paste used? Also the heatsink may not be fully mounted to the processor, it's a common problem with stock Intel heatsinks.

The BIOS is more likely to be right than a piece of software like CoreTemp.

If the BIOS says over 60C then there's a problem, because in the BIOS the processor is almost completely idle. You shouldn't see temperatures more than 20C over ambient in the BIOS - most likely the fan isn't working, or the CPU cooler isn't mounted correctly.

The only sure way is to touch the heatsink itself. The heatsink should be a bit warm to touch if the CPU temp is around ~60C and if is around 80-90C then the heatsink should be almost as hot as boiling water to touch. If the heatsink is cold to touch while CPU temp probe is registering 60C+ then the heatsink has improper contact with the HSF.

...or the temperature probe is malfunctioning.

I haven't seen bad probes since the Socket A/Socket 478 days.

It's likely that the BIOS is misreading the CPU temp. I had the same issue with an ABIT IP35-P when I built a system around it and a 45nm E8400. The modo BIOS read the CPU temp wrong in all 45nm CPU's and a BIOS update was required to fix it. IIRC coretemp and other programs like it read their temp data right from the temp sensor on the CPU die.
