Running a PHP / mySQL server locally

Fri May 21, 2004 3:14 am

Ok ive decided to, for fun, write a website which can be viewed and accessed from my lan only which contains a list of films i have available on the network. The films will b stored in a mySQL database to allow for easy manipulation and to make it easy to store plenty of information about each film: directory / actors-actresses / rating / genre / location on network.

From this site the user will then b able to run the film by clicking on a link which shud hopefully launch windows media player / powerdvd + the film on their computer.

The site will only b accessible from within the lan and i was wondering how i can go about doing this. I can program the site easy enough but just need to get the local php/mysql server running (ideally with phpmyadmin for easier table creation).

The only other snippet of information which might b important is that currently none of my machines run linux as their primary operating system although this is prolly set to change in the nxt month or so, however atm i want this working on a windows based machine.

Any help wud b much appreciated!

You first off need a server software (such as Apache) and then need to install PHP and MySQL into the software. However, you'd probably be better off with something such as AppServ which installs Apache with PHP, MySQL, Perl and phpMyAdmin. I use it purely for convenience - one wizard install rather than some wizard and some non-wizard ones.

I strongly recommend you set up this on Linux. That said, which version of Windows are you running?.

Go download:
- Apache or get IIS/check if your windows have it
- mySQL (MySQL database server & standard clients) http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/
- PHP http://www.php.net/downloads.php

Set your browsers to run WMP/PowerDVD (by using file type association by extension) if that's what you really want :o . I'd rather be asked every time.

I'm running Apache, mySQL, and PHP on a Windows box right now, no problems at all :) Took me about 10 minutes to modify httpd.conf to get the PHP part working, but other than that it was a breeze and makes a nice development box :)
