Favourite web editors

Hi,

I'm doing a bit of amateur web design involving HTML (obviously), CSS, MySQL, PHP and ASP (the latter two not together, of course, the second is going to be rewritten in the first). I'm guessing that several experienced webmasters (not least the TR crew!) inhabit these forums, so my question is - what editor(s) do you use?

I'm not looking for a WYSIWYG editor. I'm not entirely sure what to look for in a plain editor, but I've found that intelligent tab support and language-sensitive syntax highlighting both come in handy (particularly when glancing through code at speed). Do any of you have any suggestions for editors supporting (i.e. not accidentally destroying, like Frontpage likes to do with my ASP pages, and preferably having features facilitating the development of) the above languages? Freeware would be a good thing :D I'm running Windows, though if you know a really good Linux editor do post that too as I've got a sort of dual boot running.

Thanks in advance!

Let me get the smart-ass remarks out of my system. Notepad! VI! Emacs! Edit.com!

No seriously, Ultraedit is kinda neeto. It colorizes all your tags for you. It also does hex editing among other things.

Thanks for the reply! Sadly UltraEdit appears to be shareware, if my Google search turned up the right one.
I've used before something called HTML-Kit, which seems quite nifty. Anyone else used this and have an opinion on it?

:D Well, I do use Notepad religiously, but it's a bit too barebones for me. I like my tab support and my undo command :) I've scratched the surface of emacs while fiddling with Red Hat 7.3, but as I'm already learning PHP as I go, I'd rather not have to learn the editor at the same time! As for edit.com... :P

I use HTML-Kit myself and it's the best I've found. I love the built-in code validation. I highly recommend it. Shoot, I've got an old copy of Dreamweaver 4 and I still keep going back to HTML-Kit to make CSS-based pages that are standards-compliant.

I'm a webdeveloper myself and I regurarly use Dreamweaver MX for editing HTML/CSS/PHP/ASP/whatever. It's got color coding, function insight for most built-in language functions, tabs, site management, etc... and only a couple of minor quirks.

I'll be trying NuSphere PHP Editor soon, so my opinion may change.

If you're just looking for a simple.fast color-coded editor, then the winner is hand-down SciTE , found here
