NetBeans

Mon Dec 01, 2008 10:51 pm

So, I've just found NetBeans. I've just emerged it and haven't done anything with it yet, but I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with it. I know it handles plugins. Any recommendations for a XHTML/CSS/PHP Web developer?

It looks nifty!

I've heard some good things about it, but it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. What ARE you looking to do / improve? :)

Wow, last time I saw NetBeans it was just a Java IDE.

I've got two Web projects -- personal projects starting from scratch -- that I'm going to work on that will be done in PHP and PostgreSQL. (I've been converted. I definitely like PostgreSQL over MySQL.) Why PHP? Because that's what I'm teaching myself at the moment. Why PostgreSQL? It has some options that I'll need that MySQL doesn't provide.

There was something that NetBeans did that Bluefish couldn't do...I think it was properly wrap lines. Like I said, I haven't played with it yet. We'll find out if having an IDE really helps, or just get in the way. If it gets in the way, I'll go back to using Emacs.

When it comes to IDE's, it's all about your personal dev habits. Like I said I've heard good things about it from people who use it obviously, so it must work well for the way they work. Definitely give it a try I'd say. Even though their site looks like it was designed by an 8th-grader, I think it's still very well maintained and likely to be strong in the future.

Thing to keep in mind: very Java-oriented features.

Yeah, I can tell. I had to unmask a bunch of Java related packages on my system to emerge it.
