Horrible rendering in IE/Google Chrome! PLEASE HELP

Postposted on Sat Mar 07, 2009 8:52 pm

Hello people, I've been trying to get a horizonal dropup menu, and this is what Firefox got me after some hours:

By randomshinichi at 2009-03-07
Opera got the same result. For rendering purposes, it might as well have Gecko inside. And now for Google Chrome:
Image
By randomshinichi at 2009-03-07
The discrepancy between the menu and the popup increases as Google Chrome's window size increases beyond the width of the body, which is set to 1000px. When the window size is less than 1000px, though, everything renders fine.
And now for the daily WTF:

How the hell does this happen? I wish I'd taken up programming instead. Attached is the HTML+CSS of the affected part:

I bought this POS off eBay, thought it was a good deal. 60EUR including shipping for a Athlon XP 1800+!

Turns out something’s really wrong with it. And guess what, with my Compal GL31 laptop not breaking a sweat, I’m hard pressed to actually fix it. At first I found that they had stuck some really crappy RAM in there that doesn’t run at anything else except DDR200. That’s right, DDR200. For the uninitiated, that’s the slowest you can possibly go with DDR, which nobody bothered themselves with. Not even DDR266 at CAS 2.5 would work.

Well that’s fine and dandy. With the random crashing problem out of the way, memtest86 and CPUBurn all green, I install Linux. Several times. Works. Then I get some crap. Crap like my PPPoE connection inexplicably failing. X11 not starting. That’s right, X locks up the whole machine. I am really tempted to throw this **** out the window, with its ugly case and stinky power supply, if it weren’t for the fact that I don’t want to waste any more money than I already have (of course, once I get a job, this is going out the **** window).

It’s not even an exotic RISC machine to begin with! Incredibly enough, I’d be willing to put up with all this **** if it were, say an MIPS/Alpha/SPARC or something, but those never crash, so how am I to know? I’m already contemplating buying a Sun Blade 100 and PowerMac G4 already (I know I’m incorrigible), I’m especially excited about the Powermac, even though I haven’t really found a working one under 100EUR yet. I’m not letting some **** x86 machine come in and waste my time while my Compal laptop works perfectly.

For some reason, I’m getting more depressed when I think of computers lately. Maybe it’s because I don’t have any good ones around me, except for a laptop that I use as a DTR and an exotic, slow, noisy beast that I haven’t found a use for yet (but I have to admit, pushing the power button on that thing and hearing it whir up still gets me my kicks). That must be directly correlated to my wallet. Therefore, I need to stop thinking about computers and get a life. That way my spirits should go up.

BTW, did anybody get the fools rush in serenade part? Anybody?

I’ve been setting up and using this baby for a day now, and I must say, it lives up to the hype. Partially. You see, it’s still UNIX, so it does suffer from inconsistencies, especially in the Network setup part of System Manager. But the Nekochan Wiki is always there to help, and invariably in a more techy way, so it doesn’t really matter. I’m still trying to find a use for this machine, though… other than bragging about it.

The part about this feeling fast sure was true, though. You would never have guessed that this was a single processor 300MHz machine. GNOME and KDE always made my x86 systems feel slower than in Windows, but this one takes it to a whole new level. I’d say it’s right up there with BeOS in terms of response. Very responsive, stuff like Seamonkey (a pretty heavy app) starts up in 2-3 seconds (would take 6-10 secs on a P3 running Linux). You have to use it to believe it. Oh, and it’s stable too. The OS also never freezes while it tries to access a disk/remote share, like every Windows.

Then you use Seamonkey. Oh gawd, it’s slow. Slow as molasses. Performs just as badly as it did on my 675MHz Celeron running Linux with 384MB RAM at home, except it lags more often, and longer. Unfortunately, it’s not like there’s a choice. I’m told Firefox isn’t any better (Firefox lags too on my 675MHz Celeron), and there isn’t a WebKit based browser for IRIX. I would install the SGI Freeware Mozilla 1.6, which is supposed to be just as responsive as the rest of the system, but I’m afraid the libraries required would conflict with my nekoware libraries. EDIT: it’s not any better. I tried Firefox, it’s just as slow. It seems to be a Gecko tradition. Solution: switching Seamonkey’s theme to Classic (making it look like good old Netscape) makes it perform 20-30% faster. It still freezes up while rendering, but once it’s rendered the page, it’s very usable. For time-critical web browsing, dillo is **** amazing. What an incredibly fast browser… if only it supported CSS.

Netscape 4.79 is included, and since SGI had a hand in porting it over, it runs really fast and responsive. Even better than when I was using it back in 1999. However, there are some major problems with using Netscape on today’s internet. Pages that use a lot of CSS are just stone broken, while others which use Javascript work somewhat.

1. Get IRIX 6.5 (it’s the best, unless you have low RAM)
2. Copy the files into DINA (VMWare image) using either Samba or NFS (I chose Samba, because the host was running Windows XP and there isn’t a single free NFS client out there for Windows). To copy the stuff over, change the network adapter’s mode from Bridged to some private host-guest network, like Host Only, so you don’t waste time wondering if it’s the network or your computer.
3. DINA already has all the network **** (DHCP, bootp, tftpd, inetd - God I hate that program) configured. To partition the HDD, go into the command monitor:

boot -f bootp()192.168.1.100:(path to stand/fx.64 in IRIX Installation Tools CD)

There are two versions, fx.64 for 64bit SGIs and fx.ARCS for the 32bit ones. If it says execute error, just use the other one. As for the path… the relative path works for me here, but it doesn’t work for me in step 5. Relative to the directory that tftpd is sharing, I mean.
4. It seems that fx formats the partitions for you too, how nice, unlike fdisk. Run

unsetenv netaddr

deBug claims it should make things less messy and error-prone, don’t see why, but hey, it worked, I’m not complaining.
5. Exit the command monitor. Choose install system software, key in DINA’s IP address, press enter, the absolute path to the IRIX Installation Tools CD ‘dist’ folder, and sit back and watch while it works.

Step 4 only works correctly with a UNIX distribution. I swear, I had pulled out half of my hair trying the hacks detailed online to get Linux to work with this ****. It would always freeze (on my Indy R5K) or throw and error (Octane). Overall the worst OS installing experience I’ve ever had. Just save yourself, and install from a BSD Unix server. Once this IRIX installation **** is over with, I’m going to learn all I can about Unix’s little quirks.

The rest you can read here, this really helped me out to no end. In an hour or so, I will have my very own (geeky giggle) IRIX 6.5 installation, my very own SGI!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAA screenshots coming soon.

My, ritchan, that’s one BUSY computer. That’s right, people, and it’s handling all of that with no slowdowns whatsoever. It’s just a Core Duo T2050, in case you were wondering. And pretty damn soon, I’ll have a fresh install of IRIX 6.5 (of which I’ve attempted… thrice) on my spanking new Octane! Of course, when that time comes, I’ll need to find a front flap for it so it doesn’t look that… bad… it’s just not a real Octane without the front flap. Upgrades will never end, I’m afraid. Hopefully I’ll learn to live with the SE graphics instead of drooling over a VPro option like I did over an Octane when I didn’t have one.

What else in life, you say? Well… hmm… uh… oh look a three headed monkey!

Poor Onegai Teacher. It had its moments too, though undoubtedly scarce. Must be Misumi and Hyosuke, and Mizuho’s family. That’s about all. Re: Horrible rendering in IE/Google Chrome! PLEASE HELP

Postposted on Sat Mar 07, 2009 9:48 pm

It's always when I post a reply that I find the answer to my woes... in this case, I fixed the Google Chrome error by changing .widtitles .widcontent {position:fixed;} to {position:absolute;}. It renders the same way in both Firefox/Chrome/Opera. I have no idea which is the correct solution and if it's FF's fault for being too lenient, though.

Welcome to Web development. Firefiox is actually very compliant to the W3C standards, and it also interprets what is intended very well. A lot of developers actually develop for Firefox first and then fix problems in other browsers second.

When in doubt, doubt everything but Firefox, eh?
I updated the CSS, now it works perfectly with Google Chrome. However, the IE bug is still not fixed. BTW, those are floated divs. Can anybody tell me how to fix it in IE7, at least?
