SN45G + 9600 Pro

Sat Nov 15, 2003 5:41 pm

I'm planning on doing a build with a Shuttle SN45G, Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB DDR333, etc...

However, after reading up on both 9600 Pros and the SN45G, I'm worried that a 'Tyan Tachyon Radeon G9600PRO' won't fit in. I'm not one for Dremelling, sanding or filing bits off my components, so does anyone know or have experience in this matter?

One more thing, do people recommend putting plain beige or black drives in an SN45G? If it was a CD-RW or DVD I'd get get a Coolermaster silver fascia and stick that on, but I'm not brave enough to do it with a £90 DVD burner!

Generally, does anyone know if your average 9600 Pro will fit in a Shuttle?

Almost all of ATI's cards should fit nicely in a shuttle. They're all about the same size, so you shouldn't have any issues.

Only the All In Wonder versions from what I've read don't fit, though I'm not sure as to the Tyan Tachyon Radeon G9600PRO. Is there something special about this heatsink that it comes with?

Tyan Link

That's the Tyan. I guess if a 9800 Pro fits in then that will.

Hey Tom,

Doesn't look out of the ordinary. This should fit. My 9700Pro does without a hitch and the heatsink on this looks like it would clear just fine.

Thanks, I wanted to know as I'm planning on ordering on Saturday!

EDIT: Eek! I've just found a Hercules 3D Prophet All-In-Wonder 9800SE mentioned in a thread - and it's apparently softmod-dable to a 9800 Pro! At £165 (£45 more than the Tyan 9600 Pro), I think I might get that and shove an old CD drive in for the time being, then get the DVD burner once I've got the extra £45.

Will a 9800 SE AIW fit in an SN45G? Judging from above posts, I guess it should, and if I could get those other 4 pixel pipelines running...wow!

From what I can gather from reviews, the problem with the 9600 Pro AiW is the FM Tuner Co-ax input. It bumps into the bracket holding the cards in, so you have to take a bit off the bracket (bugger). However, this isn't a problem with the 9800 SE version, so I'm going to go ahead. Hopefully, I'll end up with a Radeon 9800 Pro AiW. Man, people are going to be so jealous...

See this image if you don't get what I mean.

Tomjleeds,

Did you get a Hercules 9800SE AIW for your Shuttle in the end ? Did your system power up ?

Lots of people are having power up problems with this card in the Shuttle. I bought one and tried it in my brand new SN85G4 Shuttle and could not get it to work.

The SN85G4 ships with a 240W PSU, so even the hungriest card, CPU shouldn't be a problem.

A little bird told me Shuttle's shipping a new 250W replacement PSU that's compatible with all G and G2 series models. The same bird also said in solves problems associated w/ 9600 series ATI cards.

The new Shuttle branded PSU that first appears in the ST61G4 is the one you're hoping for. That's the one everyone wants :)
