My new SB83G5 with PICS! Now w/ BLOW HOLE! PICS!

I decided I wanted a slight upgrade and since we now have a TR UT2K4 Server I needed something with a little more kick.

I wanted to experience the new LGA 775 sockets (I know A64's are faster for gaming) and I never owned a "Hyperthreading" processor.

Over the years I've owned a Shuttle XPC SB51G, SN85G4, a BIOSTAR IDEQ 210V, and now the new Shuttle SB83G5. I really love the new G5 case design, and it is very quiet.

I also purchased the PF16 Black Mesh case cover to provide for a little more airflow, and the black and silver is a nice contrast next to my Dell Monitor and Logitech MX Duo KB and Mouse.

This model was on sale at Newegg a few weeks back for $265 (free ship) so I jumped on it. Now it's back above $300.

Overall if anyone is looking for an affordable LGA775 SFF box, this is good one to take a look at.

LOL Sorry. I'm the kind of person what upgrades every six months or so and I like to try out different hardware. I wanted to mess around with LGA775 chips and see some of ATI's newer solutions (I've been a Nvidia guy for a while). Oh and I got the Dell for $250 when it was on sale so I jumped on it. I know DVI is better but at the time it was the cheapest 17" LCD I could find. I am sure I will upgrade in the future to a DVI monitor.

Perhaps when the SN95G5 comes down in price I will upgrade, but for now I am very happy with this solution. I also never had a HyperThreading processor before, so I wanted to try it out!

To answer your question yes, it is very quiet. Suprisingly so. The Smart Fan keeps the ICE fan at 950 RPM, and it only speeds up when the chip goes above 60C, which it never has. Even under 100% load after an hour of gaming it hovers around 58C. Idles at 45C. The loudest component is the X700 Pro fan, but I use Riva Tuner to keep it down around 50% speed.

I much prefer the G5 case to the newer P style Intel solutions. If you're looking for an Intel solution (most are not) then this is the one to get.

I am getting the AMD Athlon 64 version soon. But I am going to wait another month or so for prices to drop even more

I'd done that on all my XPC's, and will most likely be doing it on this one as well shortly! Before the one emkubed bought from me, I drilled a blow hole in my SB51G and put a Red LED in there! I took the pics offline a while back but it looked awesome!

Money? Nah, this mod cost $25 bucks at the most. All it takes is accurate measurements and a steady hand. Like I said, this one did not as perfectly as I would have liked, but ended up looking real good. Just a little touch up and a small extension to a hole I had to drill for the fan to fit.

If you mean it would have cost me a lot if I screwed it up well yeah, I'd have to buy another PF16 from the Shuttle store on eBay, about $60 bucks.

I got the grill, fan, C-Strip, and rubber grommets from FrozenCPU.com.

I also modded two previous Shuttles I've owned. The SB51GB, and the SN85G4 that emkubed got from me.

I'm too lazy to dig up the link to the message where I posted the details, but the easy way to put a blowhole into a case is this:

Mark the locations of the four fan mounting holes. Center-punch them (to keep your drill bit from wandering). Drill the four mounting holes. Using a straight edge, draw an "X" connecting the diagonal pairs of holes. Center punch the intersection. Using an appropriately sized hole saw, drill through. Clean up the sharp edges of the hole with a round file or a rotary tool with a grinding cone attachment. Attach fan and wire grill using regular self-tapping fan mounting screws. You can mount the fan grill from inside or outide the case for a couple of different looks. The inside mounting option leaves the screw heads flush with the outside of the case and the fan grill just slightly protruding through the hole.

I put a nice 92mm side fan on my Antec SX1030B. Of course, I did spend $15 on a hole saw specifically of that size.

Yup, that basically what I do. I got a 3" Hole Saw that is perfect for 80MM fans.

OOPs thats not my 3dMark05 score...that was my last card of 6600GT AGP 128 MSI.

I am only running about 1900 points on the vanilla 6600...which I intend to upgrade in the near future.
