Cheap Office Shuttle

Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:12 pm

I'm building a cheap shuttle for a friends home office. Can anyone see anything wrong with the following build? It's going to replace a P3 that crapped out on them.

$280 - Shuttle SK22G2-SE
$75 - Sempron AM2 3200+
$110 - 1gb Corsair DDR2 800mhz
$45 - ASUS DVD Burner
$58 - 80gb SATA harddisk Seagate
$135 - Windows XP Home
$40 - MS Business Hardware Pack (Black K/M)

Video and Sound onboard, yes I know its VIA (or SIS if I get a v2) but all they do is run 2D stuff at 1280x1024.

XP home since thats what the rest of their PC's run and they dont want to "fuss" around with Vista. They were burned by Windows 95 and so are staying clear of it all for now.

Does it have to be a Shuttle? May be just a µATX set up will do?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

I agree. This sounds like a perfect Radeon Xpress 200/300 or GF 6100 project. The price paid for SFF-ness just doesn't seem worth it here.

I will also have to agree. It seems like you can shave off some $$$ if its simple 2D and office work.

The money saved on the Shuttle can go towards an X2-3600!!! :D

It can be anything, but small is one of their goals, so mATX is probably the size

~$130 for ATI 1150 mATX
~$150 for GF6100 mATX

Then its a question of finding a mATX case and power supply that looks decent.

The Shuttle actually seems cost competitive in this (and they like the case). It would be strange to not buy the shuttle if the shuttle was cheaper.

Any money saved will be money saved, the Sempron 3200+ is already to much for them. Its just that its the first model that has CnQ enabled. You could monitor their PC for a year, I doubt it would get over 1ghz.

Plus they want firewire for their external backup system.

Just use http://www.staticice.com.au the people I buy from have a website but its 2-3 years out of date. I can normally match the best prices on Statice.

I was looking for cheap mATX boards with firewire support, but maybe it would just be cheaper with an addon card. The real question is what case?

Looks like a good setup. Keep us posted on how they perform.

Well since you asked.

They've had 2 weeks working with the PCs, so far everyone is extremely happy they like the small and no noise boxes. The only complaint was the bright blue power light, but a thin layer of black paint fixed that.

The business in question deals with house energy ratings (HERS), which are required in most states of Australia when building or selling houses. Think of energy ratings on fridges, dishwashers, etc but applied to the whole house. The rating of a house affects it sale price but can also affect its council rates, etc.

Like most small businesses the try not to spend money on things that aren’t needed. Originally this was going to only be a replacement for a P3 that died, however they decided that by a) ditching MS Office and going to Open Office and b) selling the 3 other old P3’s that they could upgrade everyone that was still on the P3’s.

The Shuttles average ~45w when idle and ~80w when running Orthos. These are all 90nm CPUs since the 65nm haven’t really shown up in Oz yet. The 2 AXP2500+ systems they have idle ~75w and load ~120w. Since their business deals with ECO management these sort of things matter to them and can be used as PR material.

These PCs should last them 5years+. They basically run Windows, Office and some custom software. The software vendor has released a support notice for WinXP till 2012. Considering they only dropped support for Win3.1 last Christmas I’m guessing it will be around longer.

Next up will be the replacement of the 15” CRTs for LCDs.
