Building my first system, an SB51G

Thu Jan 23, 2003 8:55 pm

Here is my order from MWave. What do you guys think?

SB51G (black)
P4 2.8GHz
512MB Corsair CMX512-PC2700C2
WD 200GB / 8MB cache
Pioneer A05 DVD-RW (black)
Teac floppy (black)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Audigy2
Logitec cordless elite duo
Altec Lansing 641
Win XP Pro

I already own a Samsung 191T 19" LCD.

I am very hyped to build this puppy. It is to be delivered Monday the 27th. I've read several reviews on assembly but none on what settings the BIOS should be. Do I need to tweak these or use the defaults. Could someone suggest the best BIOS settings for this combo? It will be used mainly for games and DV editing.

TIA

Excellent system! The only thing I would do, since you don't seem to be restricted by funds, is to replace the altec speakers with the undisputed champion Klispch 4.1 speakers - best 4.1 speakers out there. Or the 5.1s. Available at newEgg.com. In any case, it looks like a smashing success!

8) You don't mention mobo, all modern P4 are very good though, aren't you tempted by Granite Bay or SiS' Dual Channel DDR solutions? Anyway, great system but I'd have put a hold on that Rad9700PRO, there's a big price premium for the best esp when there is no competition, the GF-FX and Rad9700-DDRII are due out VERY soon. I might have been tempted to go for the P4 2.6ghz esp with o/c'ing in mind but the 2.8ghz is great too, doesn't the HT 3ghz tempt you? Anyway, great system, for DV editing you may want to add another 512MB DIMM though.

I looked at the Klipsch but read that the Altec's had a more refined "audiophile" sound with less BOOM. I prefer that over shear bass. Yes the 3.06GHz did tempt me but I had a budget. As far as the video card goes, I've been waiting for three months to order this thing. I was holding out for the G-ForceFX. Then I seen were it would not fit in the case due to its cooling setup. That is when I said enough, I'll order what is the best right now and try not to look back.

As far as my last question goes. Do I need to set the BIOS to any particular setting (memory timming, FSB speed, etc...) or will it do this by itself?

Thanks for the input guys.

Just so you know, the SB51G comes with Shuttle's FB51 motherboard. Here's TR's review of the system:

:) All mobos will set up everything you need to get it working correctly, there are onviously more tweaking and faster settings to use even outside o/c'ing but you should just plug in and go. You may need to manually set the RAM to run at 166/333mhz (PC2700 speed) by specifying a divider/ratio to the FSB speed (133x4=533mhz FSB). The mobo manual should cover this anyway.

;) Thanks Steel, didn't catch that bit, I rarely take head of specific model numbering for things like cases, I didn't realise SB51 related to Shuttle.

SB51G update

Sun Feb 02, 2003 1:48 pm

First, I'd like to thank you guys for your input. I recieved my order this past Monday about 5 pm and had the whole thing up and running by 10 pm. This thing is cool and fast. If anybody has any questions about any of my hardware that I have listed in the original post, I'll be happy to give my opinion.
