sound "normalization"

is there a player I can use that will make the quiets a bit louder, and the louds a bit quieter? I have some really good orchestral recordings that maintain their dynamic contrast, but I don't want to have to mess around with volume controll to maintain tolerable sound levels..

I need something like that for movies..I often find that my 5.1 set loves to shake my room, but forces me to raise the volume for dialog.

I agree, it's really annoying, especially in the matrix. The sound volume suddenly rises and then get's lower. Very annoying.
Shake it to the limit!

For movies, if you're using WinDVD, there is an option for dialog clarity.

For MP3's that have been recorded at different levels you can use something like MP3 Gain. It might work for what you're talking about.
