No sound from browsers when headphones are re-connected

Postposted on Fri Jan 02, 2009 7:20 pm

Tried to sum up the whole issue in the subject itself. When watching a YouTube video, for example, and you switch from speakers to headphones, or just remove and re-connect the headphones, the audio goes dead and video is locked at that point. I need to restart the browser to get the audio back. Observed on both Firefox and IE 7 now.

This does not upset media players, like foobar2000.

Browser - Firefox 3.2 a1pre
Motherboard - ASUS P5Q Pro
Websites - YouTube, Pandora
Flash version - 10.0.12.36
Operating System - Vista Home Premium (64-bit)

Anyone know why it is so?

USB headphones provide a separate sound device and so tend to break audio output on programs when they are disconnected; it's possible that foobar2000 is aware of this and checks for changes in the output options periodically. That's my initial guess.
Core i7 920, 3x2GB Corsair DDR3 1600, 250GB&1TB WD, MSI X58 Pro-E, Radeon 4890, Cooler Master iGreen 600, Antec P183, opticals

Just to add on - These are not USB speakers/headphones. They connect to the regular 3.5 mm slot.

Sounds like an issue with Realtek and its detection of the jacks being plugged in and out. Perhaps disabling the detection method in the Realtek control panel would be beneficial.

In that case, updating to the latest Realtek drivers may fix the issue (with some luck).
