A quick read through the comments says you should just go with the http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO
Looks a solid choice to me too.

The OP asked for a good 2.1 set. He didn't have any other parameters. Doesn't mention a soundcard, receiver, or any other audio gear. The Klipsch set is probably the best 2.1 set at or under his budget. Get the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s. You won't be disappointed.

I owned my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 Speakers for 3 years now. Great set of speakers. Although I feel they may be a bottleneck now since I have an Asus Xonar Essence ST sound card. If the mid-range drivers in the satellites were an inch or two bigger, I wouldn't consider buying something more expensive, but the small drivers sort of limit the frequency response I would like to have. I'm an Audiophile, so for the average person, the Klipsch 2.1's are just fine, unless you have a bigger room and like to listen to music while you walk around the house, then they sound a bit lacking in detail as you move further away from them, since they just can't move enough air with the smaller satellites. If you do decide to get something bigger, perhaps with a seperate external amplifier, just make the the sound path remain 100% analog from the point it exits the computer all the way to the speakers.

Does anyone know if they've fixed the problem with the Promedia 2.1s where the connector between the control pod and the subwoofer goes bad after a while? I've known three people (including myself) that had a set and every one, while sounding great for the first couple of years, eventually crapped out due to this issue.

For $200, I'd personally recommend a pair of low-end near field monitors. The trade off is a bit of bass for improved clarity and accuracy vs the Promedia 2.1s

Something like these (currently on sale for $160)

Might be too little, too late to suggest this now, but it's not hard to build your own 2.1 set; it's what I ended up doing back when I was looking for speakers for my computer as well. Managed to snag a pair of new Edirol MA-15Ds off eBay for $120 and then an 8" sub for $100. It costs a little more than packaged 2.1 sets, but the audio quality is generally better and my low-end has much more presence than what the Klipsch Promedia can produce (not because they're bad, but 5.25" subwoofer can only move so much air).

+1 to the above.

I recently moved my bedroom system into my comp-room since I never used it at its former place anyway. Having a nice pair of bookshelf-speakers and a real sub will trash a dedicated comp system anyday. I almost crapped my pants the first time I went into battlefield with the 12" B&W sub after being used to the 6.5'er that the Sirocco had. Sooo much low end stuff that most comp-systems will struggle with, promedia or not. My old comp-system wasnt a slouch, it was the old Videologic Sirocco Crossfire, which was the main competitor to the Promedia 4.1 system back in its day. Of course the budget is quite different on those compared to the B&W stuff, but there are alot of decent bookshelfs and subs out there if you look around.

I guess their web designer doesn't understand that just because a cute mouseover effect is possible doesn't mean it is a good idea...

While it may seem like I'm shilling for the company, lol, I am not, I'm just Canadian as they are and Canada is known for some fantastic speaker manufactuers.

I could not be happier with these, they sound great, while I'm unsure of why the price is almost 200, I got mine for about 120 up here in Canada, they have many other models as well, its hard to find a bad review as well, never hurts.

I live in Idaho, and was planning on driving to Canada this summer for a short vacation. Yes, Canada has great products, which makes me wish Mirage would release a set of 2.1 computer speakers.
