I am getting random audio bursts on 2 of my HTPC's

Postposted on Tue Oct 01, 2013 8:58 am

Lately my 2 HTPC's have been getting random audio bursts that last from 2-6 seconds and seem to be from a TV show, perhaps a movie or something along those lines. and when i mean random it could happen at any time but at most 2-3 times a day...or it will not happen at all but most days it might happen once. Plus it is very loud since it is using the system volume and I have that set to about 40% on my realtek stereo output 1/8th inch jack hooked to my powered partners speakers so I can adjust the volume with MPHC to my liking.

The other PC doing this is getting its audio through a HDMI cable through a LProfile asus 6570. So I do not think it matter what output is used for audio.

It can happen Browsing the web via Chrome or playing a video file or just searching through my computer files. It is very strange and I have no Idea where to look for the problem or how to find it.

Has anyone ever come across this weird behavior before?

Do you have a browser window running in the background that might be loading an audio advertisement?

Do you live near a major road? I do.
Every once in a great while, someone will drive by with a way-too-high-power CB radio and they will wash over and onto my PC speakers. It's bizarre, but very rare.

There used to be a virus that did such thing a few years ago. Just to be on the safe side, scan you PCs.

Why do you say the noise seems to be from a random TV show or movie, what do you mean? If it's just audio noise are you sure it's not the feedback noise caused GSM cellphones being picked up by the speakers? Because that sounds like it.

If yer sure it's not from cellphones, do both machines use onboard audio? Almost all onboard audio uses the same grounding plane as the motherboard itself, so any electrical noise dumped to ground can affect it. It's just a guess, but since it happens to two PCs I wonder if something is dumping line noise into the room's power circuit. If the house is receiving dirty power off the grid that could do it too.

This used to happen to me occasionally from police radios when I lived in my parents' house.

Are the two HTPCs connected to the same set of speakers (this is not clear from your post)? Could it be that the speakers are the problem?
