Good $200 CRT

Thu Jul 08, 2004 12:18 pm

I need to get a new CRT monitor, but I only want to spend around $200 for it. I'm now debating between two monitors right now. Any input would be helpful.

Samsung 955DF 19" CRT only $165
Sony CPD-G400 19" CRT only $115

I'd be interested in some suggestions too. I'll be building a net-access only budget box soon (~XP/2700, 512MB, nForce2/onboard everything), and will need a monitor.

Are the NEC's still good monitors?

As far as I know, the Samsung is one of the best gaming CRT's out there. I think NEC still make not too bad moniotors but not at the top of my list. I'd recommend Dell monitors as well.

Take a look at the ViewSonic G90FB. I believe that its geometry is better than that of the Samsung 955DF (moire patterns, etc.).

Look for a 19" CRT monitor that is perfectly flat and supports 1280x960 at 80+ Hz refresh.

The Viewsonic P95f+B is slightly more expensive than your target price, but it has the best image quality of any CRT that I have ever used.

I have several friends with the 19" Samsung, a few different models years worth. They are very good.

What the... Where can you get a Sony G400 19" for $115? I paid over $400 for mine!

Good monitor though, I heartily recommend it.

That site isn't offering it anymore (sold out), but another site is offering the same monitor for $223. Right now I'm thinking of getting the Samsung 997DF model. It's a newer version of the 955DF.

I love my Viewsonic G90f. It was $300 when I bought mine, so ~$200 would be a steal for such a great monitor. :)

I've had this Phillips 107B4 for about a year, it's pretty great.

17" true flat, 1600x1200 max res, 85hz @ 1280x960
So how fast is your car, anyway?

Oh, about 1200mhz.

Go for the sony, I have the G500 and it is a really great monitor. I managed to get it used for only $200 and it has been worth every dollar I paid for it.

I bought three of those Samsungs for our lab here at work and then I got one for home (for the kid's machine). I like 'em. (especially if you can get free shipping . ...would definitely get more when the need arises..

Sony monitors are very nice but usually pricey. NEC are also nice. For best price/performance, go with Viewsonic. I have bought an A75f and an E90f+ in the last 3 years. I paid $228 for the E90f+. The shipping was a killer. But this monitor is great. Superflat. Has Ultrabrite mode for video games which makes dark areas in games so much easier to see without having to be so dark in the room. Plus this monitor is silver with a black easel which goes perfect with my aluminum case and black speakers and it actually uses 10W less power than most monitors.

Well he did have the 19" sony for only $115, and that is a spectacular deal for a 19" and a sony too.
