Removing audible noise from bigscreen TV

Sat Aug 07, 2004 1:10 pm

My friend got a 27" Sony WEGA television, and likes everything except for the noise it makes. It's that staticky, fuzzy noise that you can hear best when the TV is on and the volume is off... only on a big TV like he has, he finds it much more audible, and quite bothersome.

Is there some way to dampen the sound? Is there some material that absorbs the frequency of sound that the TV makes? What's the best way to approach this?

His set is defective. He should return it. And 27" is hardly big screen

My 27" Sony XBR made a fair amount of humming noise, until the serviceman worked on the yoke. Never got rid of it entirely, though. Definately call service.

Yoke adjustment maybe, but many times this is due to unclean power coming from your 110v line. Drop a good quality line conditioner between the wall outlet and your equipment. Could also be a grounding issue with the wiring in your house. How old is the wiring in the house? Does it use a 3 pin prong (ground loop) or, two pin?

It's a rare day that I come across a TV that I can't hear that high pitched whine. My wife thinks I'm crazy because she can't hear it at all.

The lack of a high-pitched whine is one of the joys of having a 53" rear projection HDTV...

I hate the whine that comes from all regular TVs.... I'm very sensative to it too.

It used to bug me quite a bit, but as I've gotten a little older, I think my hearing has become much less sensitive to the high-pitched "TV flyback whine". I don't notice it much any more.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I can't say hear it unless I'm really looking for it. My bro has a 32" Sony Wega and I can't say his makes that much of a whine if at all. (nice TV BTW)
