power supply?

Fri Aug 27, 2004 8:41 pm

Sometimes when I have already shut my computer down and then we have a storm and the power goes out whether for a short or long time; when the power comes back on, my computer turns on all by itself :-?

People think I am nuts :o when I tell them this. Do I have a ghost in my computer or what

Does anyone else have this problem and could it be caused by power supply

Thank You
Carol

I don't have an explanation for this, but I know that I've had a computer before which would also turn on as soon as the power is switched on at the wall socket (assuming that the power supplys switch has also been left on)..

if you turn the switch off on the power supply (at the back of the computer) then I doubt that the computer would start by itself anymore.

Sometimes that switch is the power switch. I use it when i work in my machine so that I don't start it up if I drop a screw or something.... I'm sure the reason the system will start when it's plugged in is the design of the power supply or the motherboard, or a setting in the BIOS thats causing the behavior... BTW my old monitor turns on when power comes back on.

But yeah seriously there's nothing weird/strange/scary about that.

There is usually a setting somewhere in the BIOS (probably on the Power Management page) that controls what the system does if A/C power is interrupted and comes back on. The choices are:

- Remain off.

- Turn on.

- Turn on only if the system was on when the power was interrupted, otherwise remain off.

A system that turns itself on at odd times is often the result of incorrect BIOS settings. My wife's computer used to randomly power up all by itself... we'd just come into the room and discover that it was on, even though nobody had been using it. We eventually figured out that it was powering up whenever someone called us on the phone! Turns out the mobo had a BIOS setting that told the system to power up whenever the phone line connected to the modem rings!
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Yes, it's a BIOS setting. It's probably called "On Resume AC:"
