The glass panels of the LCD monitors and laptops and the (outer) glass panels of the LCD TVs contain negligible amounts of regulated elements, all below any criteria.

Yeah, but what about the stuff inside? I'm curious about this, too, as my cell phone display cracked the other day and is leaking.

According to the state of California, it's not a hazardous waste.

Safety
* If any fluid leaks out of a damaged glass cell, wash off with soap and water any human part that comes into contact with the fluid. Never swallow the fluid. The toxicity is extremely low but caution should be exercised at all times.

I don't know who wrote that the first time, but I found it plagiarized in at least half a dozen more locations.

Sounds just about like 80% of the compounds that exist in the world then.

As long as you cleaned your hands, I would not worry about it then.

Liquid crystals are basically carboxylate molecules (otherwise found in soap) surrounding mostly non-toxic metal ions--you'll be fine. Just wash your hands with soad and water and you'll be fine.

i think mercury poisoning doesnt really set in for several week/months.... when all your hair starts falling out and your internal organs fail (my father works in the chemistry dept at Cornell... this happened to someone in the not so distant past) . There are isotopes of the stuff that can kill you through rubber gloves even.... though i dont think they put too much mercury in lcds :-) just be careful with fluorecent bulbs though... they do have Hg in them, though not the hyper-toxic variety i just mentioned.
