Office Chairs

Our lab is going to be purchasing about 10 new office chairs to replace the old and decrepit ones currently in the lab. Our budget is something around $350 per chair up to maybe $400.

The PI of the lab is pretty much dead set on these ($350): http://www.csnofficefurniture.com/Herma ... L1053.html She has had some experiences with them before and thinks they are quite comfortable, but I think they look like cafeteria chairs and look horribly uncomfortable for long periods of office work. Anyone had any experience with these? I realize that the more expensive ones of the same brand name have quite a loyal following (Aeron chair), but within our price bracket, they don't really offer anything that looks like a nice office chair. The cheapest is something like $600...

I was looking at chairs which have more adjustments with mesh backings. Something like this ($200): http://www.everythingofficefurniture.co ... air-1.html or maybe this: http://www.csnofficefurniture.com/Offic ... T1320.html

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have no experience with any of the chairs but looking at the first one you posted made me shudder. I wouldnt haul that cafeteria chair home with me if you gave it to me. I agree with you it looks terrible. The last one you posted the office star 3680 looks nice and comfy though.

Your choices look much more comfortable, but they don't fill the budget. You'd probably have more success in selling your idea if you could find your choice for $350 per chair.

I too have no experience with any of those you've linked. All I can say is do NOT get a $150 no-name chair marked down to $75 from Office Depot. It's quite possibly the most uncomfortable chair I've ever had to use for an extended period of time. My legs, hips, back and shoulders suffer because I didn't do my research and tried to save a few bucks.

I have a Superior Chaircraft Performa 2 at work. It is highly adjustable, and I have not had back pain since I got it.

The Steelcase Criterion is similar.

I doubt that we have a budget "to fill."

But I'll double check with the person that's doing the actual purchasing to make sure our PI actually wanted these to replace our current office chairs, or if she just wanted them for lab meetings...

Any more suggestions? That Criterion looked nice, but the list price was 700.

The back of the Herman Miller looks too low to provide the support needed for a full day of sitting. None of the sub $200 chairs I've tried from Staples/Office Depot/etc have been worth it. The two you posted look good but you can't know without sitting on them.

Do update this thread with what you get and your impressions. I'm searching for a new chair that offers the support of the Aeron but without the $1000 price.

I'll update the thread once we receive the chairs. I've given my input, and we'll see what is purchased.

Well, we've decided on which chair to purchase. Has adjustable arms and a nice cushioned seat. Plus they are pretty cheap.

Seems like a pretty nice chair. Personally, i went for one great.
Had one at my former work, and it was good enough for me to get one at home. Been going strong for more then 5 years now and still doesnt show any sign of degrading. But then, i got the all leather seats as they are more durable, even though the cloth ones were stated for 10 years at 8h/5d a week use. I always thought it was expensive as its around $800 or so, but considering the longish use i will see, nah. Some of my friends has gone through several chairs already in the same time.

Whatever you do, don't go the $80 AUD no name chair from OfficeWorks, i had one and i leant back on it and snapped the weld and it nearly threw me off the chair, nearly took out my monitor in the wild grab for something to hold onto.

Looks like a good choice. You don't want to skimp on what you will be sitting in for potentially 8 hours a day. That extra $300 might sting now but its a lot better than driving home hunched over.

I am a huge fan of this chair:
http://www.herman-miller.com/CDA/SSA/Pr ... p8,00.html

But it is expensive, in lew of that, I also like this chair and have one of these types of chairs at home that I use all the time:

You can usually find good deals on those.

Well, we finally got the chairs in. I do like them, but I miss having the ability to lock the back in at whatever position I like. With the new chairs, we can only lock them in the upright position. Still, they are quite comfy.
