8800GT with Intel heatsink

Postposted on Tue Feb 09, 2010 2:48 pm

Installed Intel quad core CPU heat-sink on 8800GT video card along with some old mobo's chipset heat-sink which were used as memory heat sink. Previously, 8800GT would ideal at 62C and load temperature were 99C at 100% fan speed (would some time even crash, needless to say gaming was very noisy due to reference fan noise at 100% speed) and now ideal temperature are 32C and load is 58C with external 90MM fan at 100% speed. Personally, I am very happy with the result, as i have now further volt modded the card and currently 8800GT is at GPU 750MHZ, SP: 1950MHZ and Memory 2200MHZ. :)

Advantages of doing the mods:
Card is very very silent.
Enjoying further performance with extra overclocking headroom.

Disadvantages:
Due to Intel's heatsink i have 3 PCi slots unusable.
Card looks very ugly because of chipset heat-sink that i use as a memory heat-sink, are of different colors.

Money spend on this project: $5 for 90MM fan (Intel's fan was not fitting in, rather it was hurdle as it was touching the pci slots.)

I did some research and found out that, i am getting almost Thermalright HR-03 type performance at no cost. :D

Here are the pics.

Had to use 3.5 inch 20MM screws which are passing from the heatsink.

I would like to know, if any one has done this kind of thing before ?

Any suggestion to further improve the card's cool would be welcome.

Have you tried it with the heatsinks that come with 45nm Intel CPUs (it looks the same as that one, but half the height)?

No, i don't have one. I had this heatsink because i replaced it with Thermaltake ultra120. :)

That's a neat idea. I assume the heatsink was the single slot kind. Is the cpu heatsink much heavier than the stock? Are you noticing any additional flex in the card?

The heatsink is a bit heavier than stock, plus at first i had bend the PCB by over tightening the screws  lucky enough not to break it, but because the PCB was bend, the card was not fitting in the slot, anyway, after some search, i found the problem and solved it.

My Card can reach 845 MHZ GPU, but it would crash after some time, i am scared to further volt modding it.

Till date, 810MHZ is the stable speed i have achieved, but to be at the safer side i am currently using it at 750MHZ.

IMO it will be worse because of the wimpyness of those heatsink that ships with the 45nm chips.

Jigar, time to put that sucker back into the Fold for UGN? ;)

I don't see any hard voltmods. Did you just do soft voltmods or is it hard to see?

No hard voltmods, i have updated the bios and increased the volt within... I know soft voltmods has it's limitations but i am fine with results that i am getting.

FF: This thing was prepared keeping folding in mind, i should be back soon :D

Looks like my ideal temps are better than HR-03 GT (My ideal temp is 32C) and load temps a bit hotter (mine is 58C at load).

Need further advice, i will try everything to beat HR-03 GT :P
