That Cherry Keyboards post originally set off my spam detector due to the zf.com e-mail address, and the fact that zf.com's web site makes no mention of being in the peripherals business. However on further examination it appears to be legit. ZF is in fact Cherry's parent company.

I have one of the Deck Legend Tactile's Ryu mentioned. I love it. The keys have just the right amount of resistance in my opinion. It's built like a tank too. You could probably beat a man to death with it and then go right back to typing, errant squishy chunks of brain matter excluded, if that were required for some reason.

I have a Filco with Cherry MX Blue switches and absolutely love it. The only complaint I have with it, well all Mechanical keyboards is that there is no back lighting. Yeah I know......but......

Ninja Edit: OMG I just looked at Deck and they are back lit!!!!!!!!! ooooohhhh

I'm looking to get a Ducky DK9000 with MX Blue switches myself to replace my ABS M1 at home. I think I'll leave my ABS M1 at work because, if it ever gets stolen/damaged/etc, I only paid $20 for it.

Ducky's you can get relatively cheap from pcHome starting at like $90 after conversion: http://global.pchome.com.tw/?m=search&f ... T_24&c=E01

They ship to the US from Taiwan. I'd recommend using chrome if you're going to buy from there as chrome's native translator works on pretty much everything (except images obviously). I've heard people say that Ducky's aren't the best as far as quality was concerned over at geekhack. When I inquired about the issue further, most people are just worried about them since they're relatively new -- and they're quality isn't necessarily bad but just unknown. Of the reviews I've read they all pretty much had excellent things to say about the Ducky.

Ya. I am down to 3 choices now, the Das, the Ducky, or the Deck, the 3 D's lol

http://www.daskeyboard.com/model-s-professional-silent/

http://www.deckkeyboards.com/product_in ... ucts_id=96

http://www.tankguys.com/ducky-keyboard- ... n-pbt.html

http://www.tankguys.com/ducky-keyboard- ... n-abs.html

The Deck seems the best but hard to get and $$, the Das I can get new for 105$ cnd and readily available, the Ducky inbetween.

Das - no backlighting or quick keys (calc, vol, etc), and small lettering, but nice finish.
Ducky - no backlighting but a few quick keys, nice finish
Deck - backlighting, cherry clears, nice big lettering, but no quick keys and a bit odd finish

Seems there is a bit of a trade-off in each one. I am tending to lean towards the Das since it's available from everywhere here in Canada and it's relatively inexpensive for a new mech keyboard.

A couple of months ago, MaxPC reviewed keyboards and gave some opinions.

May want to read over what they said, since the article is recent, and informative.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/featur ... _keyboards

Talks about stuff I knew nothing about, like The Difference Is in the Switches, Ghosting and the N-key Rollover, on the fly recording, etc...

Ya I think I am going to go with 'brown' switches.

From further research I found this, which seems damn tempting, but to shell out $200 on a board I may not like, could be an expensive ooops.

Comes with browns or blues.

LOL, to each his own. I'd even gp with the das before an ergo layout. But of course I still type with two fingers.

Ah, mechanical keyboards. I would not recommend the Ducky as the build quality is just not there, at least for some of the early models. The 9000 V2's are supposedly much better, but then you can still get better for less:

I would recommend either the Leopold or a Filco off Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch- ... B004VKUSG6

You can also read much than you wanted at Geekhack.org about these keyboards.

Edit: It also possible to consult the Keyboard Oracle. http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=49

I have the Leopold TKL in MX Blues and it is a riot to type on. I do miss the keypad for work stuff, but no biggie, it makes up for it in other ways. I'm finding that with mechanical keyboards there is such a variety that once you start with one (any one) you tend to want to try them all. Good luck!

I say post some pictures when you get it. Nothing better than keyboard pr0n.

Yes, but...

When I picked up my first RK-9000 a few months back, I found the difference in key travel and stiffness between the MX blue based RK-9000 (work) and buckling spring based Unicomp Spacesaver (home) to be significant enough that switching back and forth on a daily basis bothered me. Solution: A second RK-9000 for home!

Haha! And you got the last two off Newegg, too, darn you!

But, that counts, I suppose. Better to say, you'll probably want more than one, so if you don't want to be bothered, buy two of the same!

My brother did the same thing when he found some Logitech G15s at a clearance price too cheap to pass up; he bought them out :)

I've got a Mionix Zibal 60 on pre-order at Amazon.

Not alot of backlist mechanical keyboards to choose from. Ended up being a choice between Deck and Mionix after I ruled out both Razer and XArmor. I'm gonna give the new guy a chance.

Why on earth would you want a backlit keyboard?

I'm disappointed that CVT has been swallowed up by Ideal System Solutions, and they're no longer selling their keyboards (based on the Northgate Omnikey designs). Is my Avant Prime officially an orphan now?

You wouldn't want a backlit keyboard because:
1) It's useless. You don't look at the keys while you're using the keyboard. You look at the screen or at the source material if you're transcribing.
2) Backlit keyboards create glare on your monitor in a dimly-lit room. This distracts from the game or movie that you're watching.
3) It's garish cheesy bling like a wing and a fart can on an Aveo.

Clearly because when I'm watching porn and my powerfully virile prostate fires off the moneyshot, I'm gonna need a backlit keyboard to find the mess.

I'm hoping you dislike this answer as much as I dislike your question.

The glow from my screen is all I need; why would I want more light coming from the keyboard? I actually cover the Caps/Scroll/Num lock LEDs on my RK-9000s because I consider them to be distracting!

(YMMV obviously, given Ryu's response...)

Hadn't heard about this, and I'm sad to hear it, even though I never seriously considered a CVT due to price and layout (I prefer a large Backspace key, without the large L-shaped Enter key). I've heard that Unicomp is struggling as well; hopefully they will survive so that the buckling spring fans will still have a source of new keyboards.

Oh, now we're talking!

Why you would want a backlit keyboard:
1. It's just awesome and chicks dig it.
2. Your screen won't cast that annoying glare on the keys anymore.
3. Your prostate will become powerfully virile.
