Yeeeow, no. Rushed, shallow reviews are worse than no reviews at all because they're a waste of time.

I would like to see a writeup on the monitors that go into the system guides, assuming they don't get refreshed on some sort of hyper-fast schedule.

Basic by TR standards is leaps and bounds better than most websites. I thought it was fitting :-?

I'm not advocating for a rushed review but more than what they currently do.

I agree, there is less and less reviews of probably the single most important peripheral for the PC.

I have seen some occasional reviews on www.hardwarecanucks.com though.

Now would be a good time to do that considering that the operating system page is going to need an update soon.

Is it? What's gained for a desktop user going from Windows 7 to 8? I wonder if 7 might stick around for as long as XP did, and in 2019 we'll be moaning about luddites with their legacy OS holding back progress

It's not like Microsoft has instilled confidence in Windows 8 anyhow. I mean come on... "Buy a Windows 7 PC and get Windows 8 for $14.99"..... I mean really, chances are its some limited upgrade version but still. Giving the image that its a PoS before its even out.

Windows 7 was $30 to anyone with access to an .edu address, student or not, no matter when the computer it was going on was bought. And it was totally free to anyone who bought a Vista PC late enough, IIRC.

Yea but the image then was that they were trying to atone for the back-birth that was Vista at the time and a last ditch effort to unload Vista machines. You don't follow a great OS like Windows 7 with a give away OS like Windows 8, just seems desperate. Educational discounts have always been a big part of Microsoft anyhow, Windows Vista/7/8 were nothing special, just like you can purchase copies of Office 2010 for $99 bucks vs about $300+ if you don't have a .edu email address.

Microsoft has been offering free or low-cost upgrades to persons who purchase a Windows "X" PC after the official release of Windows "Y", for a long time. IIRC they were more generous to Vista owners than they had been in the past, because Vista got so much bad press, but the business model didn't just start with Windows 7.

Perhaps I was tone deaf to the tune of Microsoft's marketing tune prior to Windows XP/Vista/7
