Upgrading motherboard,new build "advise please"

Thu Jul 26, 2012 2:14 pm

Ok lets start with what i currently have. My gaming rig is contained in a Coolermaster HAF922, with a Gigabyte P67-ud4-b3 motherboard running the F6 bios holding a 2600k cooled by a Asetek H50-60 equivalent with 120mm push pull setup, 2x4gb sticks of ddr3 1600 black corsair vengence memory, 2 EVGA GTX 560TI"s in SLI, The OS is on a 60GB corsair force SSD along with 2 2TB WD green drives as storage. Optical drives consist of a Asus dvd drive with lightscribe"useless:)" and a LG bluray dual layer burner drive. the system is powered by a Corsair TX850 watt PSU. Its using a OEM copy of win7 64 bit since it was a custom build from ibuypower back in april of last year...I would have built it myself but after pricing everything piece by piece Ibuypower was only 50$ more and it came with a 2 year guarantee so i was happy to let them build it.

The reason for wanting to upgrade the motherboard is this...It overclocks fine but anytime i overdo a overclock it goes into a rebooting loop that will only show the board splash screen for 5-10 seconds then reboot itself and continue rebooting until i open the case and jump the clear c-mos jumper for a while...very annoying. The second reason is i have a G530 cpu sitting here collecting dust since i upgraded the g530 out of my 229$ slim gateway refurbished tower with a i3 2125 cpu along with a ASUS low profile hd6570 and a PCI-e 1x wireless g card. I plan on re-installing the the g530 cpu into that chassis and selling it to a friend for 325$.

So i have 325$ to spent at newegg and build another gaming rig, since i plan on removing one of the gtx 560 ti's from sli since i have not been doing any heavy gaming lately, also i have no need for 2 optical drives on one rig and since the bluray drive works for DVD's as well. I will be planting a 560ti and one of the optical drives in my new build along with 2 250gb 7200rpm WD blue drives in raid for my OS, I feel that will be fast enough for a boot drive setup since i cannot afford a SSD at this time and the WD blue drives are free, already in my possession and i know they work.

Here are the parts i am looking to get. Advise on the motherboard is my main concern along with how not to screw up my OEM win 7 install.

1. Motherboard i hope will work well overclocking my 2600k.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131837 ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI 139$
2.PSU............. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139027
CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX $60
3.Memory....... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231428
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 46$
4.Case.......... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811108407
IN WIN MANA134 Black SEEC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 40$
Total price including shipping $285.96

As for not screwing up my win 7 install i was planning to keep my current rig complete minus the 2600k and asetek water cooler and install the i3 2125 cpu and OEM cooler into it and keeping it as my server/storage and light gaming rig. Along with poaching the DVD drive and 850 watt PSU for my new rig. So i will also be installing the 500 watt corsair builder series PSU into my current running rig.
If i need more graphic horsepower i can always take the other 560 ti as well and install a hd6450 i have collecting dust to put in my current rig.

I realize the case i selected to hold my 2600k etc is not the best but it is more compact then my haf922, has front USB3, great ventilation along with plenty of 120mm fan mounts and i think it looks pretty cool for the money. I don't have to worry about beating it up as i do not tote my cpus around at all. Just to bring them outside and de-dust them with my air compressor every few months.

Thanks for reading any thoughts or suggestions feel free to post away i would really appreciate it :D

This post is confusing. Since you're going to end up with 3 computers, can you make a list of what you want each to look like when it's complete? (new and recycled)

Computer 1:
Motherboard: New
CPU: Existing 2600k
RAM _______
etc etc

Computer 2:
etc etc

I dont understand why you don't just buy a new Z77 motherboard for your 2600k and keep the dual 560Tis in there with your 850W PSU and existing RAM. Then repurpose your existing Gigabyte P67 mobo to run the Intel G530 along with a 380W PSU and 4GB RAM there. It's a low horsepower CPU that only supports 1066 MHz RAM anyway. I dont follow what you want to happen to your gateway/i3-2120/6570 rig either, just giving it your two 2TB hard drives? What's happening to your second 560Ti? Just clarify what's happening here or everyone is going to get confused. We have a hard enough time staying on topic with a single computer build.

As far as I know with that OEM Windows license, you'll want to keep as much of the original hardware consistent with that as possible.

Ok i don't know how i made it confusing but here goes.

My current pcs
1. gaming rig in haf 922 2600k 560ti sli 850 watt psu 8 gigs of ddr1600 vengence memory, SLI 560 ti's, a SSD with a oem install of win 7
2. HTPC #1 mid tower with a i3 2120 , 6 gb ddr3 1333 1 tb HD and a hd 7750
3. HTPC #2 the gateway slim tower that came with the g530 but i upgraded it to a i3 2125 cpu along with a hd 6570 so that is why i have a spare g530 cpu
This is the PC that i will be reinstalling the g530 into and selling for 325$ Then i was planning on installing the i3 2125 into the gaming rig with the oem heat sink.

I currently have 4 1155 cpus and only 3 PCs. Once i sell HTPC #2 the slim gateway tower with the reinstalled g530 in it the i3 2125 cpu i have will go into my p67 gaming rig, along with the new 500 watt corsair PSU that is listed in my newegg order list. You see it is a OEM win 7 licence and i do not want to screw up the oem OS install by installing a new Z77 motherboard.

You can see my order list in my original post. It includes a new Z77 motherboard PSU, 8gb of ddr3 1600 mem, and a ATX midtower case.
I am trying to make 2 1080p gaming rigs from 1.

This i what i was going to do Remove my 2600k along with the asetek watercooler, one of the 560tis, one of the optical drives and combine them with the newegg order in my original post. I have 2 7200rpm WD blue drive i will raid to make one pretty quick drive to install my OS onto.

I just want to make sure i get a good Z77 board. So advise on the one i plan on ordering is my main question but i will look at anyone's suggestions.

Thank you, that clears things up for me. If you are looking for an ATX board, this anandtech article is a good read. The ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 at $115 is probably the closest competitor to the ASUS board you've listed (which is a perfectly good board also). Just an FYI, you pay a premium for ASUS' superior fan controls and pretty software. If that's not overly important to you, ASRock generally offers more features that can be quantified in a list for the same price, but their fan controls are down around MSI. The MSI Z77-G45 is really the only other board in that same price range that I would recommend even looking at. You should look at the feature sets of those three and weigh what items are most important to you to make a decision. I've owned a couple Gigabyte motherboards and just haven't been impressed. Also, TR's Z77 article does a good job at focusing on fan controls and UEFI for ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI. These are things that dont really change regardless of what actual model you end up with.

Aside from all that, if you dont NEED an ATX size board, mATX can sometimes get you more features without increasing price.
