Monoprice 10235 Monitor Initial Impressions

Mon Apr 01, 2013 7:04 pm

User jjj posted a sale for Monoprice's 30" display on 03-22-13, and I took the plunge. (see comments section on http://techreport.com/news/24549/)

Unboxing was uneventful, with the exception of a few items; the first seemingly a blatant bait and switch:
• The monitor described and photographed on the product page is not the same monitor that was shipped. No two ways about it. (http://preview.tinyurl.com/c9ha8la)
- The product page says this monitor comes with stereo speakers and the cord to go with it. No speakers, no cable, nor mention of them in the two page "manual".
- The product page also includes OSD as a feature which is non-existent. (see below)
• The monitor stand has a good range of motion, but one must literally un-bolt and shift the bolt pattern over a row to pivot the screen into portrait mode.
• On a more minor note, the foot of the stand also sticks out about 2.50" from the front of the screen; something I'm not used to with the Dells I use at work.
None of the above are deal breakers for me personally, but perspective buyers beware.

With the system powered on, the screen is just 'lovely' in my opinion, but I'm also transitioning from a Samsung DF1100 CRT (http://preview.tinyurl.com/cyouvlw).
Essentially, the new monitor has about the same pixel pitch as my old monitor (at 1600X1200), and is positioned back at arms length rather than 12" from my nose on the desk.

I did check for dead pixels, and found none. There is no calibration to be had, however, beyond turning the back light up and down.

I have not yet tried to evaluate video lag (my only other big concern), but I'm hoping this thing will hold me over until OLEDs find their way into the realm of mortal men...

All and all, not a bad purchase on the face of it for yours truly.

Edit: one more bullet and a typo correction above

Thanks for providing your impressions.

How bright is it? I own a 3007WFP currently. But I wish It was as bright as the U2410s I use at work.

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on a pair of these or their 27 inch siblings. The only thing stopping me is my concern about the longevity of these monitors.

That's awesome- and if it doesn't have an OSD or VGA/component and HDMI inputs, then it likely doesn't have a scaler, which is a good sign of low input lag, making this a great 4MP deal for gamers. Any real photo person would be calibrating through software, no big deal there, and the lack of stuck/broken pixels or subpixels is also very good.

Sounds like a great alternative to HP's ZR30w at half the price :).

I haven't seen an LCD made in the last 8 years at a minimum that wasn't bright enough. LCDs I use (even uncalibrated at work) seem to be good around 30% brightness, some much lower. That leaves plenty of room to increase brightness over time to counter fading backlights. Maybe you use your LCDs way too bright...have you ever run any kind of calibration, if not hardware then even web-based ones?

No matter how bad the new homepage sucks or how bungled the new management is...

To all the original writers/contributors and volunteers, please know that I have nothing but the deepest love for you and the work you've done.

Are the extra 3 inches worth the money compared to this one at Microcenter that Damaged reviewed?

That stand looks worryingly... small. But otherwise, it's a sharp piece of kit for a no-name, and a great move by Monoprice if they can maintain quality. I'd love to get two to go with my HP, but even if I could afford them, I'd still have to get a different desk (or wall mounts), and build a whole new system- Titans aren't cheap!

Might need to see if I can get work to buy one for me.

Couple of crappy cell phone pics is all I can offer as I'm vehemently anti-social-networking.

I honestly only got the 30" because it was on sale; somewhat of an expensive impulse buy, and Monoprice has saved me and friends from the travesty that is brick and mortar AV cables, so they get my cash. :D

I've no regrets so far. Kalameet had his way with me last night in Dark Souls, and I was all smiles...
