My first post - I've been lurking with much interest for a little while. TR is pretty freaking amazing.
I've been running a HTPC system for a while - (MythTV and home file server, dual booting to Windows for occasional other use - "music" composing and recording, gaming (I got THQs Humble bundle, so there are some titles I can't play hardly at all)). It's currently:
Asus M4A785T miniATX mono
Athlon X4 620e
2 x 2 GB (unmatched, unpaired) 1333 RAM
256GB Samsung 830
2 x WD Green drives (1TB, 2TB)
passive Nvidia Geforce 210 (hoping to retire this if the Phoronix post about AMD boosting video support to be as hassle free as Nvidia comes good. Switch to onboard or get a 7750. Currently blocks second PCI slot)
Antec Sonata III case with 'Earthwatts' 500W PSU
Dvico FusionHD dual digital tuner (pci)
E-Mu 1212m Pci-e (I like being theoretically able to record a hit albumn, even though I am not actually able to write or perform one).
My favoured local trader msy.com.au, here in Melbourne, Aus, has a couple of clearance price lists that are offering the following deals:
PNY Ram 1333 - 2 x 2GB kit for $5. (I'd get $10 worth and go to 8GB Ram)
Dvico FusionHD dual digital tuner $19 (I paid over a hundred for my identical item in 2009 or 10)
Asrock 880GM-LE-FX AM3+ Mobo $29
ThermalTake Contac29 $25
I'm finding the mere fact of the low low prices hard to resist - but maybe those are four bad choices I should rethink. $50 is a lot of money for me at the moment - maybe I should be putting it toward a Haswell replacement system late next year, or just living with my current kit, which is OK.
So, my questions:
Would you want an AM3+ mobo in case AMD gets SteamPile tearing the roof off and remembers to put it on AM3+ (I believe that they intend to.) for $29?
Would you buy PNY Ram? I've not heard of it, and the fact that it is $1.25 / GB is worrying.
Will four digital TV tuners (potentially tuning a couple of channels from each multiplex) choke the PCI bus or the (slow) HDD?
Will the Contac29 passively cool my 45W 620e if I just have a case fan? The Hyper212 Evo is only $34 as an alternate.
Any advice would be appreciated.
