Audio out is intermittent

Postposted on Tue Oct 22, 2013 1:14 pm

When playing MP4 file(no other type tried), its audio output becomes intermittent: The audio output goes off for a while(3 minutes for example) and comes back on. There is no pattern for the intermittency or it happens in random fashion. The problem happens independent of the player(WMP, QuickT, DivX), of the sound device(Integrated HD Audio, Xonar DS, USB C-Media) or of the OS(W8, two installs of W7). The audio bar graph continues showing output activity even the speaker output stops. Is the problem due to a faulty motherboard?

If it is doing it with a dedicated sound card along with the onboard i would think it is software related or a driver.

Try VLC or MPHC just to see if it plays through...least you can start with that.

As stated in my post, I tried three different players, three different sound devices, and three OS installs. The problem happens with any combination of these.

Have you verified that you don't simply have a faulty aduio connection somewhere on the output side of the soundcard?

You are right. It's sort of a faulty speaker system and the power to the speaker systems was being ON/OFF cycled.
I have primary machine that is powered by a UPS and the speaker system is also powered by the UPS. If the machine goes on SLEEP mode, the power to the speaker system is automatically turned off. The problem audio was from my sub machine and was fed to this speaker system. Thus, if the primary machine goes to sleep, the speaker output was shut off. Then, if I press keyboard or mouse for the primary machine, the speaker out came alive.
Thank you very much for your suggestion.
