Asus P8Z77 board with i72600k, onboard video?

Postposted on Wed Dec 18, 2013 4:10 am

I know this is kind of very dumb but will that work?
I believe that board has onboard video but I don't recall if it was only particular cpu's / chipsets which it worked with?

I'm a dedicated card kind of person and I've never tried it without a dedicated card, will it work? (building a machine for someone out of spare parts.)

You will have Intel 3000 graphics from your CPU of course ;)

EDIT: You might need to check your BIOS version, because you are using a motherboard prior to your CPU release, but normally you have backward compatibility.

You shouldn't have any problems getting integrated GPU on CPU (i7 2600K) working on that motherboard. FYI, Z77 chipset was release along with Ivy Bridge family. The only problem is that PCIe slots that are spec to operate at 3.0 mode will only operate at 2.0 mode since Sandy Bridge's integrated PCIe controller operates at 2.0 mode. Where as in Ivy Bridges chips have an updated PCIe controller that runs at 3.0 mode.
Ivy Bridge i5-3570K@4.0Ghz, Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, 2x4GiB of PC-12800, EVGA 660Ti, Corsair CX-600 and Fractal Refined R4 (W). Kentsfield Q6600@3Ghz, HD 4850 2x2GiB PC2-6400, Gigabyte EP45-DS4P, OCZ Modstream 700W, and PC-7B.

Thanks gents, it's just going to be a basic business PC - so that's perfect. I've been rusty the past few years and I'm sure there was an intel series where you had to have a particular CPU for the onboard video to work.

Intel's mobo chipsets don't include video anymore since that moved to the CPU but certain enthusiast and server chips don't have it so a discrete card is required. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of.
