Stumped: Intel Smart Response Missing

Postposted on Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:05 am

Setup a new Z97 (MSI PC Mate) based build running a core i3-4150 for my sister in law and it's running great -- except I can not get Intel Smart Response to work. I can't even get it to display the "Accelerate" option in the Rapid Storage Technology driver. The motherboard manual has a whole section on getting smart response to work so it should support it (even though all Z97 boards should, but I digress).

I have Windows 7 64-bit installed on a seagate 7200.9 500GB GPT disk with an EFI boot loader. The SSD cache drive is a 32GB Sandisk ReadyCache drive. Windows 7 was installed with the SATA mode set to RAID and is still currently set to RAID (confirmed further via the device manager).

I have tried:
  • Converting the SSD from GPT to MBR
  • Formatting the SSD to NTFS
  • Deleting all partitions on the SSD

Things I'm going to try very soon:
  • Reinstalling Intel RST
  • Shrinking the OS partition slightly (apparently this is a known fix *shrug*)
  • Trying another SSD

Can anyone think of anything else?

TL;DR - Accelerate option from Intel RST driver is missing even though SATA mode is set to RAID.

*EDIT* - The part highlighted in red worked for me.

Are you sure it's enabled in the BIOS? A lot of the Intel Smart whatever stuff has UEFI settings to be enabled/disabled.

BIOS manual made no mention of it during the instructions for setting up SRT and I didn't see one (other than options for rapid start technology and some fake connected standby thing). I'll double check though, thanks.

The SATA controller has to be in RAID mode too. Also for me there was a problem with drive formatting, I think it had to be just one partition and there had to be some unused space at the end of the drive or it wouldn't work (you should be overprovisioning anyway and the max you can use with SRT is 64GB). After it's up and running you can create anymore partitions you want in it's unused space.

Huh... that's weird.

Have you tried doing a secure erase on the SSD?

I would go into the raid bios (CTRL+I) and see if the options for it are there.

Also make sure you have the latest BIOS and the latest RST drives. When I was dealing with it when it was brand new it was very picky if the Sata firmware (updated with the bios) didn't match with the driver version.

It does not work with Raid enabled. At least for me it doesn't.

So... this actually worked. I shrunk the OS partition by 2000MB and right after that the "Accelerate" option showed up in the Intel RST. When I filled the drive back up it only let me fill it back up with 1999MB, so I don't know what that's about but I'm not gonna miss that 1MB.

Anyway, problem solved.

Peculiar. Anyway, thank you for feeding back what the resolution was :)

Well, maybe. I never studied in depth why the option was not available. Maybe I should look into it.
