I have a SoundBlaster Live! Value and a Matrox G400 AGP 32MB SDRAM. Whenever I am scrolling the complicated web page (ie. one with animated GIFs, lots of graphics, etc), the sound "skips". It makes for really annoying listening of MP3s when viewing web pages.

I have installed the latest BIOS and drivers for the sound card and video card to no avail.

Any insight is appreciated.

System particulars: ASUS A7A266, T-Bird 1.2, 256MB PC2100 DDR, Intel EtherExpress 10/100 PCI, Maxtor 40GB ATA/133, Windows 2000 SP2.

have you installed the latest 4-in-1 drivers? and the pci latency patch?

The A7A266 board is based on the ALiMAGiK 1 chipset, so the VIA drivers won't help here  But, I checked to ensure I was running the latest ALi drivers and I was not. I upgraded and so far so good.

And to think I was on top of all of this... thanks for the tip!

Damn! Looks like I spoke a little too soon. Problem still persists.

Just a guess, but your Live! card may be sharing its IRQ line with the AGP card. Try moving the sound card to a different slot and see if that helps.

Like I have said before and cannot say enough, Creative has built their Live! and Audigy cards out of PCI spec. This has been a going issue. I had a Live! and quickly got rid of it and my headaches by getting a new sound card.

I tried everthing PCI latency, forceing IRQ's and the like nothing worked for me. I finally was so frustrated that I bit the bullet and bought a Phillips sound card. Now I have no pops, fizzles, or dropped sounds.

Do yourself a favor and buy another card.

I think that is just what I am going to do. Thanks.

mikef,

Yeah you wont have any headaches. I went with the Phillips line, there cards are full of bells and whistles more than I will ever use or need. But the biggest plus was that it was half the cost of a Live! or Audigy.

Another card suggestion is the Hercules line I have a friend, Vrock, who has one and no complaints from him either.

I ordered the Hercules Fortissmo II last night. Hope to have it in a week or so.

Still waiting for my new sound card, but I am convinced this problem is fixable. I now have the latest drivers for everything and still have problems. As an example, if I play an MP3 using the player in LimeWire and then do a search, the playback skips repeatedly.

Is it possible this is a motherboard setting that I may have a little overoptimistic?

Well, if you use IE, have you disabled smooth scrolling.

And another thing, ACPI takes care of IRQ's. What you should check is that little nice table in the Mobo manual that states which slots share which adress lines, then reinsert the cards so the live doesnt share with any other card.

And i cant believe Creative is that Bad.
I run two lives, in perfect condition. On in a via board with all slots except the one next to the graphics card filled. And where 3 of the cards are graphic cards. And NO trouble at all. Never had any with the live at all.

Cheers

No, I have not disabled it and don't feel I should have to.

It was already in a non-shared slot.

Something specific to my configuration is the cause of this problem, otherwise I'm sure we'd see more of the same reports. I did a clean install and don't run any CPU intensive tasks in the background. I cannot believe my luck on this

No, I have not disabled it and don't feel I should have to.

Just try it,,, if you dont like it just reenable it. I know i read somewhere of people having problems with pops and clicks and they went away when disabling smooth scrolling. It may not be that you are experiencen but its worth a shot.. right.

cheers
