MSI or ASUS GF4 GF4 Ti4200

Mon Sep 09, 2002 9:42 pm

Hi there. I'm getting myself a totally new AMD Athlon pc from this store. Unfortunately, they couldn't get me the ASUS GF4 Ti4200 128MB graphics card that i wanted. I'm in Malaysia and they could only get it in 2 weeks time. But the MSI is readily available. My applications is mostly video editing, surfing and playing games like EA F1 2002, auto racing, flight simulators. Would there be a considerable difference if choose the MSI card instead of the ASUS for those applications? I really like to get the new pc soon or should i wait if the ASUS is really worth it. COmments anyone?

Is there a huge diffrence?
No

But the ASUS card is easily one of the best.

The MSI is easily just as good, and the VIVO on the MSI is the EXACT same as on the Asus. If you're really doing video editing, there is no difference whatsoever.

Hi. Which Asus GF4 Ti4200 is in question, the Duluxe, or the Pure?

I've been researching the 42oo for a couple of months now. The MSI version of this card is the highest rated version I have seen yet after reading MANY reviews. Go for the MSI! The only real differnce I can see is that the MSI appears to have a better fan, but no Ram sinks. If you do get the MSI 4200 I would recommend getting ram sinks to for the ultimate O/C experience. Try one of the kits from here: http://www.thecardcooler.com/shopcart/Chipset/memory.html for the ultimate cooling. If heat is a MAJOR concern you can get a card-cooler to (at the loss of a slot) at the same site...[/url]

Duluxe/Pure

Wed Sep 11, 2002 2:49 am

Hi. Well it souly depends whether your comparing the MSI to the "Pure" or "Duluxe" version of the Asus card. Ok, the "Pure" version uses 4ns (capable of 500mhz) and 3.6ns (capable of 555mhz) rated TSOPS memory depending on whether you have the 64mb or 128mb version, and all this is loaded on the tpyical Ti4200 short 6 layered PCB, as like the MSI GF4 Ti4200. Although, if your comparing the MSI to the "Duluxe" version of the Asus GF4 Ti4200, your in a totally different ball game. The "Duluxe" uses 128mb of very fast 3.3ns (capable of 606mhz) BGA memory which is loaded on the longer 8 layered PCB in which the bigger brotheres Ti4400/4600's sport (See Picture below). Think about this too, most more expensive Ti4400's use slower 3.6ns memory, and also the Ti4400 core/memory clocks are 275/550mhz. Now listen to the core/memory clocks of the Asus "Duluxe" GF4 Ti4200....260/550mhz, a difference of only 15mhz on the core. But now listen to the core/memory clocks of the MSI and any other typical GF4 Ti4200.....250/444(500)mhz depending on whether you have the higher clocked 64mb or lower clocked 128mb version. Now, for paying around £10 (£15) more for the Asus "Duluxe" GF4 Ti4200 than the typical Ti4200, but at the same time not paying the £30-50 premium for the Ti4400, I think your getting a rather good deal indeed, and bare in mind that the Asus "Duluxe" also does have faster rated memory (3.3ns) than most typical more expensive Ti4400 cards! Also, due to the cards extremely fast memory, when OCed, the default 550mhz, should go straight to 606mhz garanteed, and then 630+mhz, and near to £250+ Ti4600 territory. The core too should go straight to 300mhz as it's merely the NV25 GPU that the Ti4600's use, but the difference being it's clocked 40mhz lower (260mhz as opposed to the Ti4000's 300mhz), then the core should go 300+mhz. At HardOCP, they managed to OC this cards core/memory clocks to 310/640mhz, and was able to match/outperform a genuine Ti4600 card Check out the full review http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzMx if you want there is also a MSI review on the same site http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzI0 Now think about it, a £150 card outperforming/performing the same as a $250+ card is amazing, and your saving a lot too (around £100). I'd strongly consider this card if you can obtain one. But yes, if your comparing the Asus "Pure" Ti4200 to the MSI GF4 Ti4200, then I agree, go for the MSI, but if it's the "Duluxe"......go for that.

thanks guys. appreciate the feedback. just wondering, what do you think Nvidia will come up next after their Ti4200/4400/4600 series? anyone knows? and how long do you think the TI4600 will last until the software makers come up with more demanding games that require a more ummpph graphic card? maybe then i can afford to buy the TI4600

I think nVidia's next showing should be out early next year and will outperform the Radeon 9700. It's going to be a long time still before any of the software demands more than any of these cards provide. Most games now still get up to 60fps with GeForce3 ti500.

pattouk2001: I realize you're doing oakleyguy a favor in linking the pictures from Hardocp, but the bandwidth costs them money without generating hits on their site, and that's considered bad form.

I would suggest you link instead to Asus or some other manufacturer's pictures.

Hi there Ragnar Dan. Lol, just my luck, the first time I've properly inserted some JPEG's into a post of mine to give the person asking a question a better idea/insight......and I get told off, lol, oh well :(. Sorry if I've upset or offended you, or anyone else for that matter.

Just edit that post and take the pictures out. Oakleyguy has already seen them anyway. Honest mistake.
