how to SAFELY update Detonator drivers in Windows XP

Tue Dec 24, 2002 8:41 pm

i have the 41.03s, and i want to see if the 41.09's are any better, but when i was experimenting with the 40.72s before, i somehow ended up with the card not having D3D capabilities. i used system restore, and luckily some vital settings were restored and the 40.72s acted normally again. when i switched back to 41.03 (the od i have long forgotten), i noticed quite a performance increase.

i dont want to have it freaking out on me again and telling me that i dont have D3D, and i also dont want a huge pile of files beginning with "NV" (which already exists) in that system32 folder.

the last time i used Detonator Destroyer (from 3DGuru.com or someting) it was not compatible with WinXP and when i set the compatibility settings it told me that i had non-standard drivers when i did.

so what is a safe way to update a detonator driver for this computer?

thanks in advance, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Since you are running XP, all you really need to do is uninstall the current detonator, reboot, and install the new detonator. That is what I did anyways and it worked like a charm. Plus, that is the recommended way to upgrade anways.

wait another question.. when should i run the exe that i downloaded? i think it just creates a folder with the data and youre supposed to install those using install drivers wizard in windows. or do i run the exe and it installs and i restart and it works?

also the new extras like nView 2.0, are they a lot better?

Screw the .exe in the drivers. It's a lousy installer, does a lousy job.

What I do: extract new drivers. Go to control panel -> System -> Device Manager. Right-click Nvidia card, update drivers. Pick 'I will choose' and select the ones you just installed.

Never once have had any problem.

If you roll back drivers by this method, sometimes evil things happen, but it's rare that you really *need* to roll back, and it's also rare for things to break this way. If you have trouble with WinXP forcing a certain set because they're WHQL signed, you can make XP 'forget' all the drivers it's seen before by deleting anything that starts with 'oem' in C:\windows\inf\ . These 'oem' .inf and .pnf files are backups off of drivers XP has seen.

Running 41.80 and DX9 without issues.

3Dmark quick test: Car Chase Low Detail: 41.03: 85 fps 41.09: 92fps

there may be other factors, but im real happy with this...

oh does the refresh rate cause anything to slow down? it used to use 75, but i wanted 85, so to let my monitor be happy i made it 1152x864@85 hz.

ill do an in depth 3d mark thing later.

The refresh rate should not affect your performance unless you have V-Sync enabled (disabled by default I believe). V-Sync locks your maximum frame rate at what your refresh rate is, so you should really always have that disabled unless you experience a lot of tearing in the images (framerate is faster than your monitor can support).

3Dmark forces Vsync off by default. Occasionally a driver won't respond to the instruction, or a 'force vsync on' option in the driver will override 3Dmark, but you're usually OK, and can usually tell in a hurry if it's on. :)

As for the refresh rate bug, I'm really fond of Refresh Force (ReForce). Get it at: http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/ . I chose this one over the dozens of alternatives simply because it's simple and works perfectly, and isn't driver version/card maker/chipset dependant, like most of the others are. I've used it on a Radeon1, a GF3 Ti, a GF4 Ti, and a 9700 Pro, all worked flawlessly.

all right. thanks. I wanted to have 85Hz, but this old '97 monitor at 1024x1280 does only 75Hz, but can do 85 at 1024x960, and i dont like the ratio of that so i went to 1152 x whatever it was. i gotta get used to this lower resolution...

i did the whole 3dmark test, 4676, up from 4370.

Nvidia brand. What you get from http://www.nvidia.com.

41.80 were sent to the big OEMs and certain developers. They should be officially released by half a dozen OEMs in the next few weeks, or a later set.

Creative is working on a 42.00+ version at the moment.

oh, so i can still get the 41.80's in the nvidia site, like how i could get the 41.03's when they had the 40.72's be the "best" ones.

Don't think you can get them that way, they're a developer release, not a Quadro release.

I got mine off of developer.nvidia.com 's issue-specific driver release page

whatever

BTW, after i got this nvidia card, my monitor is now a "default monitor" in the settings, and it used to be the Gateway EV900 (which is exactly what it is) on the crappy ATI card i used to have. now when i installed the 41.09 drivers, it is called "Default Monitor (winseset)", and when i resume from standby (automatic, power saving) it goes back to the default 60 Hertz, and i have to change it back to 75/85.

Windows automatically detected the monitor when i had the ATI card, but doesnt now. so can i get a driver, and if there are any "general" monitor drivers (gateway doesnt have a driver for this monitor) or anything like that can someone point me to them, or if not any ways to fix this prob or will i have to revert to 41.03, and can someone also tell me how to change a driver for the monitor because i know Windows has it somewhere, and maybe i can pick from a list like you can do with printers, scanners, etc.

thanks in advance.

oh great, same thing happens... I mean the refresh returning to 60 Hz after standby... even with the right drivers... anyone had this problem? im going to get the 41.80s from somewhere... hope they arent plagued with this problem for all future drivers...

the 41.03s were actually very reliable actually when compared with the other ones i tried...

and why the hell am i typing all these ellipses...?
