9500Pro or 9700?

Fri Feb 21, 2003 4:10 pm

Is it more worthy for me to get a R95Pro or a 9700nonpro. I wanted to upgrade my current tnt2  Would these cards last me at least a year or two for the upcoming games such as doom3, dues ex2 or stalker?

My Specs:
P4 1.7Ghz
RDRAM 640MB
17' Triniton
Some BS Asus Mobo.

Hey-

I think the savings on the 9700 vs. the 9700Pro is only $30. With that in mind the 9700 is a poor value. It is more capable than the 9500Pro, but it is not as good in cost/benefit analysis.

At less than $200 for DX9 capability the 9500Pro is a great value. If I had the money for the 9700 I would sell some blood and get a 9700Pro. But that's just me.

I have money for a R9700Pro, it just that i figured if i overclock the R9700 to close to the Pros specs, i can save my self some money. If i overclock the core to 325, i would get the same number of mpixels/texels and AA sample rates wouldnt i? and if i over clock the memory close to 620, it would be close to 19gb bandwidth.

I'm seeing a much larger price difference for the 9700 and 9700 Pro. About $60 on Pricewatch, or 30%. The performance difference between the two is definitely not 30%. Maybe 15% if you had a 2.8/533 P4 or better.

Check it out for yourself.

8) All 3 of the Rad9500PRO, 9700nonPRO and 9700PRO offer great value for money and should last well over the next 2 years. Of course getting a Rad9500PRO now would free up that bit more cash for another upgrade or to invest in the next Rad9500PRO type card in 12-18 months time. The Rad9700PRO is the only one to guarantee o/c'ing and the fast RAM should yield good results as cores are pretty much the same on Rad9500-9700PRO but just clocked differently. Weigh up the prices as all offer excellent perf to price but of course rem that the GF-FX range and new Radeon 9800/9900 are due out VERY soon (within 2 months it seems) so you may regret buying too near the top end right now.

I see prices like this:
<$200 Radeon 9500 Pro
<$250 Radeon 9700 non-pro
<$300 Radeon 9700 Pro
<$395 Radeon 9700 All-in-Wonder

I believe that the Radeon 9700 non-pro is a good value. If you can wait just long enough for NVidia to finally get the GeForceFX on store shelves and ATI to get R350 and RV350 out, there may be some more options.

Has anyone else noticed Radeon 9500 Pro prices increasing while GeForce4Ti 4600 prices plummet?
