9700 to 9700pro would I notice a big difference?

Mon Mar 24, 2003 6:29 am

So on my new system I want to go to ATI and ditch Nvidia. Will I see a big difference between the 9700pro to the 9700? I'll be running Asus A7V8X Deluxe board with 2500+ (Barton core) and 512 3200 ddr. Any thoughts on this one? Any brands in particular? :-?

- The only time you'll probably notice is in benchmark tests.

- Stay away from "power color"!

At the moment, probably no. There aren't that many games that use that kind of grunt power yet.

8) Diffs are small for the added cost. If you can handle flashing the BIOS and o/c'ing the Rad9500PRO achieves Rad9700 perf while the Rad9700 achieves Rad9700PRO perf ... no point getting the top chip esp with the FX & 9800 street release so close! All brands are virtually identical for the Rad9500 & up so price and bundle should be by FAR your top priorities.

The only thing with the 9500 to the 9700 is 9500 has 4 pixel pipeline while the 9700 has 8-pixel pipeline. I'm in no way a over clocker. Plus the 9700 comes with 256bit mem, 9500 is 128 so is that a really big difference?

9700PRO (0.15) 325/310 256bitDDR 8pipes 2.6GB/s 19.8Gp/s
9700 . . . (0.15) 275/270 256bitDDR 8pipes 2.2GB/s 17.6Gp/s
9500PRO (0.15) 275/270 128bitDDR 8pipes 2.2GB/s 8.6Gp/s
9500 . . . (0.15) 275/270 128bitDDR 4pipes 1.1GB/s 8.6Gp/s

 Check any of the many reviews to see what diff it all makes ... 4 vs 8 pipes and 128bitDDR vs 256bitDDR. 4 pipes will always hold you back significantly regardless of o/c, 128bitDDR (with 8 pipes) isn't nearly as limiting and 128bitDDR+20% faster clocks equals 256bitDDR perf. You definitely want 8 pipes and 256bitDDR but you have to question the perf gains against the added cost.
