I thought about what you guys have said so on friday I bought a radeon 8500 64MB at frys. the rebate was gone but no biggie. when I got it home I went to the add/remove programs folder. from there I removed all my nvidia drivers. I restarted with my new radeon 8500 in plase and and turned installed the drivers from the CD after that I played quake 3 for a bit and realized that the Q3 "optomiser" was in so I go to atis page get there latest driver (not the rage 3d one) and restart. now I keep getting messages that say "delayed write failure" and "program cannot save allthe data from 'c:/$mts...' now I cant connect to the internet, print things, delete the drivers via add/remove programs or anything. and the worst part is it plays Quake three like a dream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're using Windows? Well no wonder!

Generally, add/remove programs is not the way to get display drivers installed. Try going to the display control panel and Device Manager.

the problem isnt getting the drivers installed its getting them uninstalled. I used the .exe that the driver from online came from to install it. how do you remove it?

Speed, he didnt use the add/remove to install the drivers, he used it to remove his old nvidia drivers.....it sounds like ur Computer is all locked up around these drivers, put ur old nivida card back in and the system probly will not access the ati drivers on start up, and proceed to remove the ati drivers and start over.....

Boot into safe mode (press the F8 key as windows starts to boot). You will be able to remove whatever you need to from there.

thanks guys but it LOOKS like I fixed the problem allready. I used the "load setup defualts from the bios and then used addremove to get the display drivers out. I hate using the Q3 "optomised" driver though. it comes on the CD. what is all this about the new 8500 driver from rage3d? is it stable enough to use yet? is it a beta?

ATI has 2 different drivers posted on their site, an official driver and a beta driver. I don't know if you specified which one you tried out, but go back to ATI and dowload and try out the one you didn't try already. Or at least that's what I'd do. And if that doesn't work, go for the sketchy drivers at rage3d ;P

i thought i fixed it but now its worse... I went thru the setup for the downloaded driver from ati it said "delete the folder that the ati driver is in" I do that, I then try to install the driver it said about halfway thru... "we cannot finish installing the display drivers" so it install the media drivers anyway, i go to the add/remove programs folder and when I go to the add/remove folder it said that the display driver is still there, i try to remove it it sez "we cannot uninstall old/non-ati drivers" I cant just go under system32 and start deleting things!!! if I reinstall the old geforce2mx400 and the driver CD do any of you think it will overwrite the radeon drivers?

I will recommand you clean install Windows, then install 6043 2K/XP driver or 9021 9X/ME driver~~
They can be find in the main page of Rage3D~~!

I had the same problem messing with drivers on my Radeon DDR 64mb VIVO. Weirdest conglomerate of errors I've ever seen. I just decided "fook this" and reformated. That fixed the errors and my long-running fill rate problem.

I formatted and the only issue I have now is a failure delayed write error. this has gotten me so angry that Im considering getting another card like the ti500. I think nvidia drivers should be a LITTLE safer to use

Perhaps the chip itself is flawed. Just a thought.

maybe but all I know is that I cant erpform basic operations on my computer when the radeon is inside it. I can play games though, thats the weird part. I get like 97FPS on q3 on quality at 1600x1200x32.
thats some nice performance!
