6850 Triple Monitor Support Woes. What they don't tell you.

Yeah I discovered this the hard way myself. Ended up having 2xDVI monitors to the left and right and replacing the centre monitor with a D.Port compatible (Dell 30") I kind of foolishly assumed a card with 4 ports means I can use all 4 outputs... oops.

Looks like I need to buy a monitor with display port then. Can't say I blame AMD - the average user isn't connecting 3 random screens. If it was me, I would have started researching as soon as I had to buy something to get monitor number 3 to work I.e before I started spending money.

Look at the bright side - you ended up with a 30" monitor!

BTW do you like it? I have the HP at work but can't decide if I should get the HP or the Dell for home?

Dell for connectivity, HP for gaming; both for professional work. HP is cheaper.

I have three monitors running off a 6870, and I'm considering adding two more in another room.

Before I bought the 6870, I was using two video cards. I did the research, but there are a lot of subtleties if you're not using dp based monitors, and I missed a few. My own view is that this is simply the result of a new tech, and there's a little added learning to do. It's a lot cheaper than buying new database programs annually in the 80's until I found one that would do all that I wanted.
