Any problems with Nvidia 2xx.xx drivers?

Postposted on Mon Oct 24, 2011 9:01 pm

Has anyone had any problems with the Nvidia 2XX.XX drivers such as "crash and recover" or anything else? If you completely reformatted your hard drive and then installed the latest version, did that resolve your issue?

yes..crashes every time I try to install the drivers. I have downloaded the drivers 3 times. the file sizes match up. not sure what the issue is atm. Currently the installer says I have the graphics drivers installed but no nvidia control panel, no phyx , and any time I try to load BF3 of BFBC2 I blue screen. Which leads me to believe that the graphics drivers are not installed. going back to previous drivers for now until I find a solution

The driver "crashed and recovered" just a moment ago, waiting for the next one.

Driver installed fine for me,I did the auto detect card option on the page and it detected sli 560 tis, loaded fine and asked for a reboot....weird i was not asked to reboot on the last 2 driver installs.
But i had BF3 lockup on me on the single player camp, right as i was finishing covering the guys from the rooftop after the rocket shot.Have not tried it since.
Also the ultra setting are a bit too high i think for even 560tis in sli, feels slightly jerky.Looks fantastic, cant figure out how to adjust individual setting yet just lets me do ultra high etc,but cannot change the setting below the top row??

Now you guys have me concerned.

Just rebuilt the SO's system with a GT 430, and the 280.26 drivers. I'm getting occasional OS freezes at the desktop, requiring a reset. Have run a full RAM test, no issues, no hard disk issues in testing, etc. I admit there are more things I can try, but after reading that link on the nVidia forums, I'm tempted to back it down to the 275.33 drivers.

Driver forum threads are generally not good reading. People who have much larger systemic problems pollute the signal to noise ratio.

The 280 & 285 branch of the drivers tried to do some more aggressive things with GPU power management. It's looking like the changes work fine on reference cards, but cause all sorts of hell on 500 series and especially 560 series non-reference designs.

The tiny sample size of my 8600M GT and 590 GTX haven't had any serious issues. For the overly concerned the 270.61 and 275.33 might be a safer choice until they get this sorted out.

There will be a driver release in November that will be more appealing to Battlefield 3 players.

Generally speaking, if 285.38 is working, does that mean 285.62 should work too? Is this just a non-reference problem? If that's the case, then maybe I'll try them out since my 470 is a reference design. I think the browser crashing and lockup reports have me the most worried. I think I'll wait a while after reading that thread, get a clearer picture, as people with 570's and 580's are reporting problems.

FWIW the 285.62 pack doesn't seem to be causing any issues (so far) with a 460GTX under Windows 7 64-bit, with a clean install of both the OS and the drivers. An older 8800GT under XP 32-bit has also been cooperative.

If you were going to have a problem, you'd already see it. The 285.38 was causing the same woes as the 285.62 and yes it does appear this is a non-reference issue.

Yeah it happens sometimes unlike the last driver release where it was almost every half hour. They definitely worked forward on this but it is still "crashing and recovering", going back to 275 if it happens again.

Same problem for me, I have a 460 card running win7, 64bit. Both Crash and recovery (the computer can idle and crash) and suddenly FF started to crash quite often. I havent had any crash what so ever on my computer for 10 months before, so I guess Ill go back to 275 :(. Luckily win7 seems to handle it quite good so I dont lose any work.

Yes this is a huge problem and has been ongoing for over a month now. Here's a thread on the nvidia forums about it:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s=dbe876c13bc6e7f73c0d5f188e3e1cec&showtopic=207666

...naturally, nvidia have not stepped forward to admit anything is wrong with their drivers. I wish this would get more exposure as it seems to affect a massive amount of people.

The issue really only seems to be present in Firefox (and specific websites too like Gmail), but if you turn off Hardware Acceleration in Firefox the problem seems to go away but then Firefox becomes sluggish.

Update: Now that I have been using the Windows7/460GTX system for a while, I've experienced the crash-and-recover problem at least four times with these drivers, usually while browsing the Internet with FireFox.

I've had issues with several generations of nVidia drivers doing the crash and recover, it's not specific to a system or hardware or OS. About the only consistent thing is the nVidia driver.

My home systems is: Intel i5 750, 4GB Ram, nVidia GTX 560 Ti on Windows 7 64-bit
Work System: Dell Inspirion d630, Intel Core 2 Duo, 3GB Ram, nVidia Quadro NVS 135M, Windows 7 32-bit

I recently upgraded from an ATI 5770 to the nVidia GTX 560 at home. The ATI was rock solid for web browsing and general use, not crashing & glitches. All default settings. After the upgrade, I get crashes at least once when browsing.

My most common scenario for the crash is browsing under FireFox or the use of Adobe Flash (specifically on YouTube.com). Google Chrome does it less, but still happens on YouTube. Maybe it is hardware accelleration, maybe it's flash (that stuff is everywhere).

What I am looking for is a clear and consistent way to gather logs to submit to nVidia for them to see what's happening.

Hello.

This is some real mess with these new drivers from nvidia. Like they let some raw apprentice to decide if drivers fulfills whql standards and can be used by hundreds of thousands of people.

Going back to point, I had problems with these 280.x (a message bubble in the tray informing that "screen driver has stopped working" or sth like that and many texture issues in games like Aion). Then I read about these problems that many other people had them and they recommended a previous ones which were 275.33, as a stable ones. I tried them and everything was fine.
Then, few weeks later I found that new drivers were released, 285.62. I installed them, and they were working fine few days. But since yesterday I've been experiencing weird behavior especially in Aion. Textures and general graphic's artifacts, weird dots on screen and overall discolouration, screen freezing that forced me to alt+tab or ctrl+alt+delete to open Task Manager (to leave the game and bring it back eventually). Have the same thing that was with 280.x, sometimes - tray's bubble that "screen driver has stopped working" - alternately with screen freezing and graphic's artifacts.

This is in polish language version: http://i.imgur.com/NCXIg.png
This occurs even while just browsing websites in Firefox, e.g. Screen goes black, then recovers and brings this message. I hadn't had this with 275.33 yet, till I installed these 285.62 few days ago...

I have been using Win7 32 and GF GTX 460 for a quite long time and I didn't have any issues before. Now I've returned from these junky 285.62 to 275.33 (uninstalling from Control Panel and doing clear installation after OS reboot) and still got mentioned problems with graphics... Especially when I run Aion or run Win7 performance test (it throws up some dots, different colour lines - etc crap - and behave like I had 256 colours set on screen; after test is complete, everything goes back to normal). Wtf - I ask? Should I use Driver Sweeper and give it another try? Or what?

Now I'm a bit pissed, cause I once read some official rummors that there were some drivers in the past that were burning GPU - inappropriately were managing fans' speed, which were not working properly while being in a huge 3D stress. Hope it isn't my GPU, but just a software's matter.

Best regards,
Cronson.

Just when I thought things were bad at the red camp with my 11.10 and 11.11 drivers crashing whenever anything anything OpenGL is run, it seems that the green camp is having driver problems of it's own.

On my stationary computer equipped with a 9800GT I noticed that games were lagging whereas they never did with older drivers. And we're talking baaad lag here, not framerates dropping 10-20% but the game going to a complete halt for several seconds.

On my laptop with a Quadro NVS 135m I could no longer watch gpu-accelerated 1080p nor 720p videos smoothly, and when running a Windows User Experience test the GPU test results dropped from 4.9 to 3.8. And the laptop got ridiculously hot with the fans spinning up to top speed even though Windows had just booted and nothing was running either in the foreground nor background.

Attempted a clean install of the latest beta drivers (v285.79) on both computers and all the problems mentioned above disappeared. I've no idea if they were caused by old incompatible config-files from previous versions not being compatible with newer v285.xx drivers or something else. And I can't say I care now that the problem is fixed/worked around.

Edit: Both are Win 7 x64 systems. And no, none of them run Firefox.

New 290.xx beta drivers if you are daring, hopefully they fixed the "crash and recover" so I may actually be able to use it, they didn't put that as one of the fixes so... 275 works, but when I tried the second 285/86 release I noticed a sizable improvement in graphics as well as everything else. If you do download the new beta drivers it would be awesome if you could post your results here:)

Has anyone tried nuking their system and installing the latest WHQL release from a completely fresh start, if so did it work to resolve the "Crash and Recover" problem?

Since the thread is silent, I guess everyone noticed the "new" beta driver worked better. I installed the one from 2011-11-23 two months ago and I havent had one crash. I notice its not a beta anymore, but anyway

I have installed the latest drivers, 296.10, no problems so far. Drivers 295.73 only crashed once and it was when I had IE9 and FF 11 open (both updated). I was at the "Charlie Rose" website on FF and IE9 on the msn's home page when it crashed. I think when Microsoft certified NV's last WHQL release (295.73) the problem was fixed or at the very least they took a step in the right direction. Hopefully fixed:)

Using the 296.10 here with my 560tis @ 965mhz cores 2400 memory and cpu running a few MHZ shy of 4.7ghz.I finally installed fraps BF3 withe everything ultra no motion blur post aa and 4x msaa and hbo something i dont drop lower then 89 fps and most of the time its well over 120fps even breaking 160 sometimes. Not a single crash in over 2 hrs of playing around with the single player missions.....also used chrome and watched 1080p videos on youtube and some assorted MPHC and VLC.
