ValleyView: Next Generation Atom SoC using Ivy Bridge GPUs

Postposted on Wed Mar 21, 2012 8:31 pm

Some interesting information "leaked" from Intel due to some codenames included in kernel updates for some next-generation Atom based SoCs: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... px=MTA3NDc

It looks like Intel is dumping PowerVR and moving the Ivy Bridge GPU architecture (likely in cut-down form for low power consumption) over to Atom. This is *excellent* news because Ivy Bridge already has excellent open-source driver support under Linux and that means that the craptacular PowerVR drivers that have crippled earlier versions of Atom will soon be a thing of the past. I've said in the past that Intel's GPU efforts are almost entirely geared toward mobile users and this just exemplefies that philosophy.
Yes your system is faster than mine. But mine is old enough to operate as a time machine so that I can be a roadie for Hüsker Dü. So therefore mine is *AWESOMER*.
Oh, and GET OFF MY LAWN.

Seems unlikely to me. Sandy Bridge GPU, maybe, but not Ivy Bridge. Ivy Bridge is 22nm, while Sandy Bridge and ValleyView are both 32nm; it would seem like a lot of work to move the 22nm GPU to 32nm.

Besides, David Kanter said Intel's 22nm Atom cellphone chip will have PowerVR Series 6 GPU in it. It would be silly to switch to an in-house low-power GPU for just one intermediate chip.

With Windows-for-ARM imminent, is there any point to an x86 cellphone CPU? Intel has already lost that battle.

Atom for netbooks/tablets, meanwhile, desperately needs a major graphics improvement.
