Upgrading HD 5750...

Postposted on Fri Aug 10, 2012 5:43 am

Hello,

Im planning to upgrade my ASUS HD 5750.

My current system config:-
AMD PhenomII X6 2.8Ghz
6GB RAM
600W Huntkey PSU
18.5" Acer Monitor (1366 X 768 max resolution).

I need a card which satisfies the below requirements:-
1. Must last for atleast the next 2 yrs.
2. Budget 15000INR (300 USD)
3. Atleast 40+ fps in all games.

The idea to upgrade got into me since I started playing Arkham City and noticed that I'm getting 12-13fps average. Although Battlefield 3 runs smooth in high settings at 40+ fps. I mostly play at 1366X768 resolutions.

Pls suggest me a good card.
I'm really confused between the HD6870 and GTX 560 Ti.
Or else should I wait for GTX 660 to launch?

Thanks in advance.... :)

For that resolution you should't need more than a HD 7770

Agreed, HD 7770 should be more than enough for your requirement.

Are you sure there isn't something wrong with your Arkham City settings? Seems odd that a 5750 would only get 12-13 FPS. It's not hugely less powerful than the 7770. The Tech Report review of the 7770 shows an overclocked 5770 reaching 50 FPS at 1920x1080: http://techreport.com/articles.x/22473/4

Now, obviously an overclocked 5770 would be faster than a 5750, but not by a large amount. Don't forget the 5750 and 5770 were essentially renamed as 6750 and 6770 and preserved into the 6000 generation, so they're not exactly underpowered. I'd look for the reason you're getting bad performance before spending any money, a 5750 should be serviceable for a while yet...

Remember there were huge performance problems with Arkham City in D3D11 mode with the early versions. Are you sure you've got the latest patch?

This tracks with my experience somewhat. I am using a 5870 and FPS slows to a crawl whenever there is a chain link fence on the screen (and slightly less bad around a fire escape). I'm running at 3840x1024 and it's shockingly bad in some cases.

+1 for a 7770 if you're looking for a new card at 1366 x 768. That will even take you into 1920 x 1080 resolutions at slightly reduced video quality settings.

As Myrmecophagavir noted though, Arkham city is pretty buggy even with the latest patches. (and worse in the original release) Make sure you have the latest patches for the game and the latest graphics drivers for your GPU. Battlefield 3 is a more consistent metric for performance. If you read this article, and look at the frame time history graphs of Arkham City, you'll see there are MUCH more long frame times compared to BF3. (also shown in the "Time spent beyond 50ms" graph) In the case of Arkham city, there is so much microstuttering that it's notceably affecting the average FPS.
