Three Monitor Support Radeon Card (Without DisplayPort)

Sat Apr 13, 2013 1:39 pm

Hello gentlemen,

Three monitor support with radeons typically requires one of the monitors to be powered off of the DisplayPort. I know of the Sapphire Flex which allows you to just use the normal VGA/DVI/HDMI ports to support multiple monitors. I also know that ANY GeForce 600-series card can support this monitor configuration without DisplayPort, provided they have the available ports.

My question to you is this: are there any 7850 (7870 is out of my budget) graphics cards out there which are able to power three DVI/HDMI/VGA monitors without an expensive Active DisplayPort adapter?

Unless you need duak link DVI the active adapters aren't that expensive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812200949

I don't know of any AMD cards that allow you to get away without an adapter.

Some graphics cards will have mini-DisplayPort. Check the ports on your card to determine if you want this one, instead:

That's the exact adapter I use on my ATI card at work. Been using it about 9 months, haven't had any problems.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

For the record, the reason you don't see more than two DVI/HDMI available on most video cards is because DVI/HDMI (they're basically the same thing) require a clock generator, and usually the graphics card only has two. Even on cards where you have two DVI and an HDMI, you can usually only use two of them at the same time.

That's why everyone here is recommending you to just get a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter, because you just can't run 3x HDMI/DVI monitors off the same card. There's a few cards by -- I think, Galaxy? -- called MDR x5 or something like that which use a special chip that allows you to run like five DVI monitors from the same card, but they're very rare, and AFAIK, they're not Radeons.
