Need Some Advice on Large Display Monitor/TV

Tue Sep 03, 2013 9:37 pm

Hello a few years ago using info from this site I successfully built my first system. It has been working great thanks to all the helpful advice from members of this forum. The computer was mainly for my girlfriend to use to edit her pictures in Photoshop (she is a budding photographer). She was diagnosed with Stargardt's disease which is a juvenile form of macular degeneration when she was 16 years old and now at 31 her vision is currently about 20/400. She is very passionate about her photography and I hate to see her sitting with her face an inch from the screen struggling to see her work.

We are currently using a Samsung 2232bw 22" monitor and it seems as though lately she is having a harder time than usual I fear her vision has declined to the point now she needs a bigger monitor. Which is what brings me back to this forum once again seeking some helpful advice. I purchased a Sanyo DP39E63 39" TV (here are the Specs) and want to make sure this is the right move.

With this unit hooked up we have noticed that streaming movies seem a little choppy and the color is a little too processed. I wanted to know if I should invest in a better monitor or maybe a graphics card would help I am not sure. I got this TV for $300 and depending on which way it goes would like to stay around $400 total investment.

Here is the info on what I am currently running:
Motherboard- GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H ATX AMD Motherboard
    Processor AMD Athlon II X4 645 3.1GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
    Memory-Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Storage Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223L LightScribe Support
    Audio-Integrated
Enclosure-Antec Three Hundred Black Computer Case
Power Supply-OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W Power Supply compatible with core i7

Korean 27 inch IPS seems like the best option to take.

The TV's low DPI and processed colours likely make it less than ideal for photography uses.

Stargart's, eh? A friend of mine has that. Sucks big time. :(

And yes, the 27" Korean model listed above should fit her needs. There are 30" variants too. Just hit eBay and look for ' 30" IPS monitor '. Or look in Amazon for local variants of the same things, for example this one.

Take a look at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824236293

I just bought it. It's a gaming monitor, so it should meet your requirements, plus more  and it's less than $400 - (you may have to adjust some of the setting: color temps, resolution, contrast, etc. Pretty easy though)

That's not going to cut it for photo work :(

Yeap. That's a TN monitor - basically unsuitable for photography or similar type of work, even after proper calibration, and a total waste of $$$ considering its high refresh rate and the fact that original poster basically has an integrated GPU and not interested in fast-paced gaming.

Speaking of calibration - whatever monitor the original poster will purchase he should definitely purchase some calibrator for it. Personally I recommend something like a Spyder4 series - they are relatively inexpensive, very easy to use and provide good results (unless they are defective... but their defect rate is pretty low and you have a warranty for that).

EDIT: I misread. Since you have the TV already see if it has a game mode in the TV's settinga It just might bypass the over processing the TV is doing and reduce the lag.

Sorry to hear her vision is deteriorating so bad :( I know this Seiki Digital SE39UY04 39-Inch 4K Ultra HD 120Hz LED TV is 300$ over budget at 699$ But it will do 3840x2160 resolution at 30hrtz or 1920x1080 at 120hrtz and it has 60 reviews already so you can read them for some insight on the unit. http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE3 ... B00DOPGO2G

I do not know why people are recommending hi DPI 2560 panels under 30 inches with her 20-400 vision a 39" or bigger panel would be best for her. If a big panel is best I would go for a Panasonic 42" Class Plasma 1080p 600Hz HDTV, TC-P42S2. I have a 55" panasonic plasma hooked up to my HTPC and color reproduction is great plus it is very adjustable color wise temperature etc.

A plasma will give you a better picture and colors then a LCD and blacks are great.
It is going to be heavy and big so i rec you get a fully articulating wall mount so it does not take up a ton of desk space plus she can pull the tv closer to her or so you can turn it 90 degrees in any direction to watch TV on it. Like this wallmount from Monoprice.com for $55 http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id= ... cification
It can extends over 2 ft off the wall and will hold 77lbs.

Even if you do get a 39+" LCD over the Plasma I still rec you get a nice wall mount for her and you just cant beat Monoprice.com for prices and quick shipping. Also if you need a long HDMI cable or cables of any kind that's the place to get them also. a good 15ft HDMI cable only costs around $5 from monoprice.

I have a fully articulating wall mount I bought from Monoprice for my 55" 100lb TV for $48 almost 2 years ago "was 225-250$ at target and bestbuy" and it so sturdy and does not shake hardly at all if it's fully extended and you bump into the corner...It does not budge and hurts like a mo fo when you hit your head on the corner :) I have good vision 20-20 and at 3-4 ft away with cleartype adjusted it is very hard to see the pixels on text but I can see the pixels on the Smiles selection on this forum and my text in win 7 and chrome is set to 125%.
Gluck hope you find what she needs.

The problem with a TV is that it'll inherently have big pixels (1080p on 40", for example). Since she's going to be looking closer at the screen, I believe it's a better idea than staring far away with only 1920x1080.

However, the idea is valid if she intends to sit farther away and 1080p is enough. Have to be real careful choosing the TV though, because of color accuracy.

That monitor has a nasty TN LCD panel. No amount of adjusting can fix the inherent flaws in the TN LCD technology that make it completely unusable for photo editing (the primary use that the OP specified).

Bad suggestion, re-read OP. They want something for editing photography.

I'm rather vocal about suggesting 120hz and 144hz for gaming on these forums for GAMING, but that is not the usage scenario for OP's girlfriend. The Korean IPS is everything they need without breaking the bank.
