Well they did need to say something. If it was entirely silent, the internet would start buzzing with conspiracy theories.

I'm sure it still will, but better to set the conversation than to just let it run wild.

But why the commitment? The article makes it sound like they've embraced Nvidia only graphics (or shunned AMD) for as long as Origin exists from this point forward.

If they were truly non partisan, they could have simply said they've decided not to use AMD for the time being due to some perceived issues, but were willing to re-evaluate at a latter date, etc...

It does scream a bit of jumping the gun...or they just got a *very* nice offer from Nvidia in terms of long-term pricing deals.

They do not hide their partnership with Nvidia:
http://www.maximumpc.com/origin_pc_nvid ... chines2013
Question is, why did they decide to do that? Is it only because Nvidia gave them significant discounts, or perhaps because everything they said in that quote about AMD products was actually true or something in between?

Prestige Worldwide wrote: But in my mind, an AMD card should be priced lower than nVidia, because to an enthusiast like myself, they still have some mindshare to make up for. They still have a reputation of having bad drivers (whether the drivers are actually bad at this point is debatable), anybody who follows hardware news or rumours knows about the frametime problems. I'm sure that's not an issue for most GPU buyers who don't follow these things at closely, if at all. They probably just see the Never Settle bundle and think "FREE GAMES, AMD R0X0RZ!"

Yep. I think this sentiment can be summed up by Nvidia coming across as if they treat their gaming GPUs as their raison-d'être. It's the company's priority. they are proud of their gaming GPUs and they will take every advantage, be it fixing driver issues in a timely fashion, better driver quality control to begin with, or shady marketing to make sure their cards are no. 1 in mindshare. With AMD, due to their financial woes, skeleton staff, CPU product development problems, are just not coming across as a graphics company that are making their gaming GPUs enough of a priority (at least relative to Nvidia).

And I agree, until they can and do conduct business in a way that shows customers otherwise, why shouldn't you expect to pay a bit less for a similarly performing AMD GPU. After all, you could take the perspective that you are are incurring slightly more risk as they are not as committed/do not have the resources to back their product.

And yet they have the resources to bother with a new API, add hardware surround sound processing...

Maybe their software staff have been too preoccupied with the console hardware this past generation and the desktop drivers have gotten short shrift. Hopefully things are changing.

Yeah. And we remember how fast AMD got regulators to go after Intel when it gave Dell pricing incentives to not offer AMD processors... They can't be that dumb. Can they?

Edit: And, a bit of a coincidence? Valve's Steambox speccs sent to testers don't include anything AMD either..

Why should they include anything other than Nvidia? Especially considering that it uses OpenGL and Nvidia seems to be very interested in improving and optimizing their drivers for it (instead of creating new, proprietary APIs):

This is true. I wanted to pick at one thing though:
Prestige Worldwide wrote:I miss the AMD that released the 4870 for $299 1 week after the GTX 280 launched at $649 and the GTX 260 launched at $399. They delivered performance as good as the GTX 280 for $350 LESS.
No. See here.

Radeon HD 4870 was not quite as fast as the GTX 260 in most titles, though they traded blows. It was nowhere near as fast as GTX 280. It was undoubtedly superior price/performance, but it was not as fast as the GTX 280 and prices on GTX 260s dropped rapidly. I know, I owned both.

I'm very eager to see reviews of the new Radeon cards.

I'm expecting Radeon R9 290X to retail for under $600.

Nope, according to Phoronix a GTX550Ti is about twice as fast as a 6970 in the Linux world, when comparing closed source drivers of course:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... 5way&num=6

Admittedly, the games they test are quite old (Phoronix always does that for some reason), but at least they're not CPU limited yet as performance does scale with better GPUs. On the green side that is.

so you consider GTX 780 and Titan to both be ridiculous?

tbc I agree anything over $600 seems steep but I'm curious, I'm a little more of the opinion that $500+ taxes is where it all should be at the most.

i mean nvidia is right now exploiting the fact that there is no competition and charging a premium but for amd to come and do the same thing is just pushing it for us customers paying over 500 itself is insane for single gpu's

the titan makes no sense to me at that price i think the fact that its called titan itself helped them sell a few probably hell it does sound great

what amd is doing right now is trying to make us think that the real competitor to the 290x is titan and pricing it at 700ish is a bargain for us i doubt they r considering the gtx 780 as competiton

well thats jus me

A big AMD fan here...but Titian beating seems like a reach.
The benchmarks show it neck and neck...hardly beating.
Titian is of course a very limited niche product.
The real competition is the GTX 780 at $660

Yes, beating the GTX 780 would be nice...but not at $729...

However, AMD might be intentionally self limiting demand due to availability constraints....

Dribble out a few at a high price to BF4 players who will see great results from Mantle...and lower price as demand grows(more mantle optimized games) and as supply increases.

Not something that would make me happy, but a logical roll-out strategy. :-?

They have a unique opportunity to pull a "4870" here and have R9 290X retail at $499 ish.
That would really energize the market and AMD would win a lot of 'hearts and minds" again while giving a big shock to NVidia like they experienced with the way over priced GTX260
shortly after the launch of Evergreen RV770.

Yeah, but AMD can't afford to do that. R9-290X is a huge, massive chip, with an unbelievably complicated board design, and I wouldn't be surprised if even at $699 their margins on it are not super great. AMD is not in a great situation financially right now, and they need as much as they can make off these cards.

I think mdk77777 hit the nail on the head here with his hypothesis above.

selling cards for free is not a "unique opportunity", worse as proven by the "HD 4870" their is next to no long term benefit.

AMD launched a DX 11 product a year ahead of Nvidia with the HD 5870 series and what did it get them post "winning hearts and minds" with HD 4870.... nothing more, worse for them they couldn't sell their DX 11 cards at the premiums that used to be asked because they'd devalued the entire segment.
They do not hide their partnership with Nvidia:
which makes their opinion worthless.

I don't agree with that...they had improved marketshare with Evergreen and won props from many reviewers and users for the aggressive price at which it debuted.

And wtf is this?
selling cards for free is not a "unique opportunity",
:-?

"Free" huh?
Hope I get one for "free" :P

I don't think they lost anything at all. If you're trying to argue opportunity cost, I won't go into that.

Has anyone found a decent shot of the retail cooler yet?
Not the shroud, which has been posted everywhere, but the actual heatsink - type, fin density, number of heatpipes or vapour chamber....?

October 15th seems like far too long to wait ;)
