6870 1GB to 6950 2GB?

Postposted on Fri Dec 06, 2013 1:18 pm

Hey all,

I've recently come upon a deal on a 6950 2GB. A friend of mine is selling his for $100. I currently have a 6870 1GB, and I mostly game at 1080p, though I'm looking at one of the Korean monitors within the next year. If I got the 6950, I'd probably use my current 6870 to mine Litecoins with. Is it worth it to upgrade my current system (specs in signature) with it given my usage?

The problem with old upper end Radeons like this are that they're usually abused for coin mining, as you've put out that is something you intend to do. If you keep track of deal websites, 7950s (and 280x) have been under the $160 range several times in the past, and that might be something worth looking into for a card you know that hasn't been thrashed.

With this card, I've actually tested it myself. I ran FurMark for a good hour and the temps stayed flat around 74c under load. In addition, the two of us just put new thermal paste on it last night. If it's a known-good card does it make sense?

We're talking about a card that loses out consistently to a Radeon 7850 at a much higher power draw.

http://techreport.com/review/22705/xfx- ... ics-cards/

That review compares a 6870, 6950, and a handful of 7850 cards. For $100? No way. It's better than $100 cards like the 7770 and GTX650, but you're better off saving up, even knowing you're using a 6870 right now. And I'm talking about new or otherwise - my opinion is in no way swayed by the fact the card is used. I wouldn't go for it new, even.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.

Agree with derfunk. At $100 it isn't a very good deal. Honestly that's the price I'd expect most used HD7870s to be going for these days.
