HDMI output from my laptop

Postposted on Wed Apr 09, 2014 7:38 am

My HP Pavilion laptop has an HDMI output, but I cannot find what the output resolution is. I would like to buy a 27" IPS monitor to attach it to and use that rather than the built-in 17" when the laptop is on my desk.

Any information is appreciated.

You can only guarantee 1920*1080 or 1920*1200 resolution from an HDMI port unless the manufacturer states that it's version 1.3 or 1.4 - I haven't been able to find what version of HDMI out the Pavilion in your signature has. Higher resolutions require that all HDMI components be version 1.3+ compatible - including the HDMI output, the HDMI cable and the monitor/TV receiving the signal.

If you're only planning on a 1920*1080 or 1920*1200 monitor, you should have no problem. If you're wanting a 2560*1440 monitor though, I'd definitely try to test it with a certified HDMI 1.3/1.4 cable and a monitor with a 1.3/1.4 input before purchasing.

The HDMI port should work at 1280x720p and 1920x1080p at 24Hz, 50Hz, and 60Hz for sure, many other resolutions should be supported though.

Your graphics driver determines what resolutions can be piped out through that port. It's a two way link between the laptop and the screen you use, ideally only the resolutions that are supported by both are shown.

The laptop in your sig can use the latest Catalyst drivers, and should be able to output whatever resolution you need.
